Sony plans to stop using the PlayStation Network name and logo by September 2026, according to a recent internal email obtained by Insider Gaming.
The online service is getting a visual update, but won’t have any changes to how it actually works. Sony plans to remove the current names from everything by September to make its branding simpler and more consistent. The new name for PlayStation Network hasn’t been revealed yet.
The email assures players that all PlayStation Network features they currently use – like connecting with friends, playing online multiplayer games, and earning trophies – will continue to work as usual.
Via Insider Gaming, here’s the email in full:
Sony is updating its branding. We’re moving away from the names “PlayStation Network” and “PSN” to better reflect the full range of our online services, which are constantly growing and changing.
We’re updating the look and feel of our services, but there won’t be any changes to how they work. By September 2026, we’ll be removing the names “PlayStation Network” and “PSN” from all of our materials to create a more consistent brand. Don’t worry, everything you enjoy about PSN – like connecting with friends, playing online, and earning trophies – will still be available. We’ll let you know when these changes happen, around the time we update our technical requirements in fall 2026.
According to reports, the recent decision was based entirely on how things looked and shouldn’t affect players using PlayStation 5 or 4 online. PlayStation Network had 132 million active users each month in the third quarter of fiscal year 2025.
The PlayStation 2 had some online capabilities, but the PlayStation Network as we know it really began with the PS3. Sony has continued using the PlayStation Network name, and recently, PlayStation Plus has also become a key part of the experience, especially with the PS4 and PS5.
