Project Hail Mary ending explained: Does Ryland Grace survive and does he return to earth?

(**WARNING: Contains spoilers for Project Hail Mary**)

Andy Weir stories—like his new book and movie, Project Hail Mary—are known for putting incredibly bright characters in desperate, seemingly unsolvable situations. Then, the characters use science and ingenuity to try and survive. Project Hail Mary is no exception, and its main character, Ryland Grace, faces a truly harrowing ordeal.

The movie centers around Grace, a remarkably gifted teacher portrayed by Ryan Gosling, who becomes involved in a global mission to prevent an extinction-level event. A mysterious organism called Astrophage is draining the sun’s energy, putting all life on Earth at risk.

Gosling assists in creating a risky plan: sending three scientists on a likely one-way trip to the Tau Ceti system. Their goal is to discover why it’s the only nearby star system not affected by the Astrophage, a phenomenon causing stars to lose brightness.

During his journey, he encounters an alien named Rocky – who quickly becomes the most memorable part of the movie – and discovers they share a common goal: both of their home stars are fading due to a threat called the Astrophage. This sets off a series of fun, science-based challenges, ultimately sending Grace and Rocky on a vibrant, interstellar quest to save their planets.

But how does it end and what does it all mean? Here’s everything you need to know.

Project Hail Mary ending explained

About halfway through the movie, Grace and Rocky discover why Tau Ceti isn’t suffering from the Astrophage like Earth is. It turns out the Astrophage travels to a planet to reproduce, but that planet is also inhabited by tiny life forms. These microscopic organisms actually eat the Astrophage, stopping it from spreading uncontrollably and dimming the planet’s sun.

Grace and Rocky embarked on a mission to collect tiny life forms from the planet orbiting Tau Ceti. Their goal was to use these organisms to combat the Astrophage, a destructive force wiping out stars in both their home solar systems. To do this, they devised a plan to build a massive collection chain, allowing them to gather samples of what Grace nicknamed ‘Taumoeba’ without risking the Hail Mary ship getting too close to the planet.

Naturally, things don’t go as planned when a leak develops in the Hail Mary’s fuel tank. This causes the ship to spin out of control, and Grace is knocked unconscious. Despite the drastically different atmosphere, Rocky bravely leaves the protected environment of his bubble to rescue Grace and save their mission.

With Rocky critically injured and possibly dying, Grace takes on their shared mission. She analyzes the Taumoeba samples they collected and discovers how to grow a large enough population to stop the sun-destroying Astrophage. She also figures out how to make the Taumoeba survive and reproduce on Venus, which is rich in nitrogen.

Using designs from Rocky and the unique xenonite material found in Rocky’s ship, he builds containers to safely hold the valuable, but dangerous, Taumoeba for the journey home. Fortunately, Rocky recovers from his injuries, and they share a moment of celebration before a heartfelt goodbye – one of the most touching scenes in the film.

It’s on the way back, after Grace and Rocky have parted ways, that Grace has a worrying realization. The Taumoeba could easily break free from the special containers Rocky built to contain it. And once it escapes, it will immediately go for the Astrophage, its preferred food.

The Astrophage isn’t simply making the sun dimmer; it’s also what powers the Hail Mary spaceship. As it consumes matter, it generates a huge amount of energy, which it releases to push the ship forward – essentially acting like a powerful engine, as one character describes it with the colorful phrase ‘toots and scoots’.

It would be disastrous if the Taumoeba consumed all the fuel on the Hail Mary, but Grace quickly contained the leak. Unfortunately, she discovered Rocky’s ship is built entirely from xenonite. This means she can’t stop the Taumoeba from escaping, leaving Rocky stranded and exposed to dangerous radiation levels.

Grace can either use the remaining fuel to fly back home with the Taumoeba samples, or he can send the samples back to Earth using the four probes – each named after a member of the Beatles – and then use the leftover fuel to rescue Rocky.

Of course, he chooses the latter.

Grace finds Rocky just in the nick of time, rescuing her friend before it’s too late. Together, they journey to Eridani, Rocky’s home world, on a mission to save its sun. Meanwhile, the four Beatles are returning to Earth to protect our own sun.

As Grace recovers his memories after waking from a coma, there’s one key question he can’t answer: why he was chosen to be on the Hail Mary mission.

Okay, so the setup is intense. This mission was always a one-way trip, planned with a tight-knit crew of three: a pilot, an engineer, and a scientist. But tragedy struck – both the primary scientist and his backup died. That left Grace, a reluctant expert, as the only one who could actually pull this off. The catch? He flat-out refused to go. But Eva Stratt, the mission leader, wasn’t taking no for an answer. She essentially kidnapped him, drugging and secretly putting him on the ship, because in her mind, he was humanity’s last hope. It’s a pretty morally gray start, to say the least, and it immediately throws you into a really compelling, if unsettling, situation.

Only now, as he sacrifices his own return to earth to save Rocky, does he realise she was right.

While that’s happening, Stratt and her team of scientists from around the world gather the four probes sent by Grace and begin working with the Taumeoba to try and save the sun. We see her traveling to a secluded base where the samples are stored, and she watches one of Grace’s last video messages where he acknowledges she was correct to choose him for the mission.

Does Ryland Grace survive and does he return to earth?

The film concludes 16 years in the future, showing Grace living in a massive, specially-built environment on Rocky’s home planet, Eridani. Rocky designed this habitat to allow him to thrive there, and it provides a comfortable life for Grace by artificially controlling the climate, water temperature, and even creating fog.

Rocky excitedly told me the Hail Mary was prepped for his return, and I paused, considering it. I told him I’d think it over. Then, I headed over to the little classroom he’d set up on the beach – honestly, it was so sweet – and found it completely full of baby Rockys! They were all so eager to learn, and a little bewildered by their new teacher, me. It was a really surreal sight.

It’s come full circle – we see Grace thriving as a teacher again, after an amazing adventure through space. He makes a friend who inspires him to be courageous, and it’s through this friendship that the key to saving the world is discovered.

While it’s unclear if Grace truly returns to Earth, the movie concludes with a positive and hopeful feeling. It implies that Grace and Rocky’s connection isn’t a final goodbye, but rather the start of something new.
