A tense, sci-fi thriller starring Rebecca Ferguson is gaining popularity online, years after it didn’t perform well in cinemas. The 2017 film is finding a new audience on a streaming platform.
New data from FlixPatrol shows the 2017 sci-fi thriller Life is gaining popularity on the free streaming service Tubi. It’s currently the fourth most-watched movie on the platform in the United States, having entered the top 5 on March 19th. Viewers continuing to watch could potentially push it even higher in the rankings over the coming weeks.
The film features a team of astronauts on the International Space Station, including stars like Ryan Reynolds and Jake Gyllenhaal. Their mission to study a newly discovered lifeform quickly turns dangerous when the creature begins to rapidly evolve into a deadly threat. It starts eliminating the crew members one by one, and soon Earth itself could be in danger.
The film Life is gaining appreciation from viewers nearly a decade after its initial release in theaters, where it didn’t perform as well as hoped. Despite a modest $58 million budget, it only grossed a little over $100 million (according to Box Office Mojo), which wasn’t enough for a profit and ended plans for a sequel—though it was originally conceived as a single film. While this renewed interest comes too late to change the film’s overall reception, audiences are now recognizing its strengths.
Life Deserves a Second Chance on Streaming
Despite disappointing ticket sales, the movie Life also failed to impress critics. Reviews were mixed, with a 67% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Viewers generally agreed, giving it a 55% score on the Popcornmeter and an average rating of 6.6/10 on IMDb.
Even though opinions on Life are varied, it’s a film that deserves recognition. It successfully builds a truly frightening story with increasing suspense. While it might not reach the iconic status of Ridley Scott’s Alien from the 1970s, Life should be praised for its modern take on the classic ‘killer alien’ theme.
The acting in this movie is fantastic, really capturing the terror of being stuck in a small space with a deadly alien. Rebecca Ferguson is particularly impressive, showing once again how well she performs in sci-fi roles. Ryan Reynolds and Jake Gyllenhaal also have great chemistry together, although their interviews leading up to the movie’s release were arguably more talked about than the film itself.
I’m really glad to see Life getting another chance on streaming! Even if it’s a bit later than some of us would have liked, it’s just great that a good movie like that can still find an audience, whether you see it in a cinema or at home.
Life is available to stream on Tubi.
