Red Storm Entertainment Suffers 105 Layoffs, Turned Into Support Studio – Rumor

Red Storm Entertainment, the studio behind the popular Rainbow Six games, has closed its doors after almost 30 years. According to VGC, 105 employees have been laid off as the studio’s game development operations have been discontinued.

I’m really sad to hear about the studio closing, even though it won’t be a complete shutdown. It’ll still help with the Snowdrop Engine and general IT stuff, but it definitely feels like the end of an era. They have such an amazing legacy, especially with all those classic tactical shooters! I remember being a huge fan of the early Ghost Recon games – Advanced Warfighter and Future Soldier were some of my favorites. Ubisoft bought them way back in 2000, and they’ve been making incredible games ever since.

Over the last ten years, the studio’s output has slowed down, even while releasing VR games like Star Trek: Bridge Crew and Assassin’s Creed Nexus VR. Two major projects, a Splinter Cell VR game and Tom Clancy’s The Division Heartland, were cancelled despite considerable work already being done. Furthermore, the fact that games it assisted with, such as XDefiant, were later discontinued didn’t improve the situation.

Although Ubisoft hasn’t explained why it dissolved its game development team, the change probably stems from the company’s restructuring announced earlier this year. This restructuring involved reorganizing teams into new ‘Creative Houses’ under different leaders, and it also led to the cancellation of games like Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake.
