The First 10 Defenders Members in Marvel Comics, Ranked by Power

The Defenders began as a unique Marvel concept – a group that wasn’t really a team at all. It started with three very different heroes – Hulk, Namor, and Doctor Strange – joining forces to fight a major threat. Two of them, Hulk and Namor, often struggled to fit in with traditional teams, so this group was intentionally unstructured. They only worked together when a global crisis arose, and even then, no one was obligated to participate. While they didn’t always get along, they understood the importance of relying on each other when things got dangerous. Over time, the team became more conventional. Namor and Hulk eventually moved on, and by the 1980s, the Defenders functioned like any other superhero team.

I’ve been a fan of the Champions since their very beginning – all the way back in Marvel Feature #1 in 1971! It’s amazing to think about how the team grew over time, eventually reaching ten members. I was curious to see who the original lineup was and how their powers stacked up, so I decided to rank the first Champions members from the most to least powerful.

10) Hawkeye

Hawkeye began his career as a villain, initially clashing with Iron Man. He quickly turned things around, earning a spot with the Avengers after the original team disbanded. Feeling undervalued, Hawkeye left the Avengers, surprisingly joining the Defenders almost immediately in Defenders #7. This led to a confusing battle between the two teams, as they mistook each other for enemies. While not known for immense power, Hawkeye is an incredibly skilled archer, famous for his trick arrows that can accomplish almost anything.

9) Nighthawk

For many years, Nighthawk financially supported the Defenders. This was the original Nighthawk from the main Marvel universe (Earth-616), Kyle Richmond, who inherited a large fortune after his father’s death. He became a vigilante after being convinced by the Grandmaster to take a serum that enhanced his abilities. Nighthawk joined the Defenders with issue #14 and became a long-standing member. The serum gave him superpowers, making him stronger than Hawkeye, though not as powerful as some of the other Defenders.

8) Yellowjacket

Hawkeye wasn’t the only original Avenger to team up with the Defenders. Hank Pym, one of the Avengers’ founding members, also joined the group as Yellowjacket. This happened after he’d revealed his secret identity to his teammates, but before a personal crisis led to his dismissal from the Avengers. He worked with both teams at different points, first appearing with the Defenders in Defenders #23. While Nighthawk is incredibly physically gifted, Hank Pym’s years of experience as a hero, combined with his scientific expertise and the power of Pym Particles, make him one of the strongest heroes from early Marvel comics.

7) Luke Cage

Luke Cage was wrongly convicted of a crime and, while in prison, was subjected to illegal experiments. These experiments unexpectedly gave him incredibly durable skin and superhuman strength, allowing him to escape and eventually clear his name, becoming a hero. He started out as a ‘Hero for Hire’ and later joined the Defenders in issue #17. Because he needed income, Nighthawk hired him as a paid member, even though the Defenders weren’t a traditional team. Despite being one of Marvel’s strongest characters, Luke wasn’t among the original Defenders’ core six members.

6) Namor

As a huge comic book and movie fan, I’ve always found Namor fascinating. He was one of the very first members of the Defenders – that quirky, unofficial superhero group. It’s cool how Doctor Strange initially pulled him into a team-up against these ancient evil beings, the Undying Ones, and then brought in the Hulk for extra muscle. Honestly, compared to Strange and the Hulk, Namor’s maybe not quite as powerful, but that’s only because those two are ridiculously strong! He’s a bit of a loner, distrusting pretty much everyone, so being part of a loose alliance like the Defenders suited him perfectly – he could call on help when he needed it without any long-term commitments. When he’s in the water, though, forget about it – Namor is basically unstoppable. His biggest problem is just getting him out of the water, because on land he’s significantly less powerful.

5) Valkyrie

I remember when Valkyrie first showed up with the Defenders in Giant-Sized Defenders #1! It was so interesting – she wasn’t always the warrior we know. She was actually a regular human named Barbara Norriss who came to the Defenders because she’d been given the power of the original Valkyrie. It messed with her memory a bit, but the Defenders helped her out. Since she was stuck here on Earth with no other options, she decided to stay with the team. Being Asgardian, she’s incredibly strong and has all the powers you’d expect from a god, plus she heals super fast and can even sense when someone is close to death. And get this – she has three thousand years of combat experience! She’s easily one of the most skilled fighters on the team.

4) Daimon Hellstrom

Daimon Hellstrom is a particularly complex member of the Defenders due to his unique parentage: his mother was a woman named Victoria, and his father is the Hell-Lord Satan, making him literally the Son of Satan. After his mother was placed in a mental institution, Satan took in Daimon’s sister, Satana, but Daimon stayed on Earth and gradually discovered his own powers. He committed his life to battling his father’s wickedness and officially joined the Defenders in Giant-Size Defenders #2. Over time, Daimon gained control of a realm in Hell, becoming all-powerful there. While on Earth, he possesses demonic abilities including control over hellfire, pyrokinesis, and a mastery of magic and mystical forces.

3) Doctor Strange

Doctor Strange was once the Sorcerer Supreme in Marvel Comics, meaning he was the most powerful magic user around. Though Scarlet Witch now holds that title, Strange remains incredibly powerful. He was also a key founder of the Defenders, cleverly bringing Namor and the Hulk into the group. As a sorcerer, he’s unmatched, even though he temporarily lost much of his power when Wanda Maximoff took his magical items.

2) Silver Surfer

Silver Surfer became the fourth member of the Defenders in Defenders #1, teaming up with Doctor Strange, Hulk, and Namor. Although this was a short-lived partnership, he sensed an impending danger to Earth, but the Avengers unfortunately complicated things. Together, these four heroes formed arguably the most formidable team in Marvel Comics history. Considered one of Marvel’s strongest beings – even a universal threat according to the Nova Corps – Silver Surfer possesses the ability to destroy planets. However, he usually restrains himself and doesn’t unleash his full potential, thanks to the immense Power Cosmic flowing through him, which makes him nearly unbeatable.

1) Hulk

Without a doubt, the Hulk is the strongest member to ever be part of the Defenders. He’s one of Marvel’s most powerful characters overall, far surpassing most others. He’s defeated numerous heroes, including Thor, Iron Man, Wolverine, Hercules, and even Namor, who helped found the team. Many stories depict the Hulk surviving even the end of the world, outlasting everyone else. His incredible strength is fueled by his anger, meaning the angrier he gets, the stronger he becomes. Because his rage has no limit, he’s essentially unbeatable when he’s truly angry, solidifying his place as the most powerful Defender of all time.
