Comics artist Lorenzo de Felici is quickly gaining recognition. He recently helped launch a shared universe for Transformers and G.I. Joe with his series, Void Rivals, created with Robert Kirkman. Now, he’s starting a new horror comic called Red Roots with Image Comics, arriving in stores on April 22nd. The series has already generated buzz with a cover by Hellboy creator Mike Mignola, and ComicBook is exclusively revealing another striking and memorable cover for the first issue.
The first issue of Red Roots has a new cover by artist Ryan Orttley, hinting at a scary scene – perhaps a movie night that takes a dark turn. The cover shows a large, threatening figure looming over a woman and her pets as she watches TV. It’s a creepy image that seems like a great fit for the tone of the series.
Red Roots is Wholly Original Horror

I just got a look at the premise for Red Roots, and it’s got me intrigued. It centers around the connection between a hitman and a high school teacher, and honestly, that pairing feels ripe for some genuinely scary stuff. What’s really cool is that this is a passion project for creator Nick de Felici – he’s handling both the writing and the artwork, which he’s talked about on social media. It sounds like he’s pouring a lot of himself into this, and I’m definitely keeping an eye on it.
The secret’s out! I’m thrilled to announce my new project, Red Roots, Issue #1 will be released on April 22nd, 2026. Mark your calendars – the Final Order Cutoff date is March 30th! Just like with my previous work, Kroma, I’m handling all the writing, art, and coloring myself, and I’m incredibly excited about how it’s coming together. I can’t wait to share more details, but even more than that, I can’t wait for you to read it! Oh, and did I mention it’s going to be a whopping 48 pages long?!

Despite De Felici’s enthusiasm, many others are also looking forward to this new comic series. Kirkman has called it a prime example of comics reaching their full potential.
Kirkman praised Red Roots, calling it a prime example of exceptional comics. He highlighted its unique premise, immediately engaging characters, and a plot full of unexpected surprises, stating it’s the comic fans have been hoping to find.
Besides new covers from Ottley and Mignola, the first issue of Red Roots will also feature artwork by de Felici, Luana Vecchio, Riley Rossmo, and Jason Howard. It hits stores on April 22nd, and the deadline for retailers to place their orders is March 30th.
