Channing Tatum’s $533M Action Remake Film Series Is Climbing Up the Charts 12 Years Later

Channing Tatum is incredibly popular on Paramount+ right now! Three of his films, including two that are connected, are currently among the top 10 most-watched movies on the service.

Both 21 Jump Street and 22 Jump Street are becoming increasingly popular on Paramount+ in the US, according to FlixPatrol. They’ve each moved up one place on the platform’s Top 10 Movies chart, now ranking at No. 5 and No. 7.

Despite their release, neither of the new action comedies has managed to reach the top of the charts. The 2025 biopic, a story about an ex-Army Ranger and single dad who hides in a Toys “R” Us after a prison escape, is currently holding steady at number two. It hasn’t been able to unseat the remake of The Running Man, which remains in first place.

Lord & Miller Revived 21 Jump Street to Critical and Commercial Success

Originally, 21 Jump Street was a TV show on Fox that ran from 1987 to 1991. It followed a team of young-looking police officers who went undercover to solve crimes in high schools, gangs, and places where teenagers hung out. Before the movie came out, the show was quite popular.

Phil Lord and Christopher Miller made their live-action directorial debut with a reboot of the film. The story follows officers Jenko and Schmidt, who go undercover as high school students to stop a new drug from spreading and catch the person responsible. The reboot takes place in the same universe as the original series.

The film’s cast included Brie Larson, Dave Franco, Rob Riggle, and Ice Cube. Johnny Depp and Peter DeLuise made brief, uncredited appearances, reprising their roles from the original TV show. 21 Jump Street was a big hit with audiences, earning $201 million globally, and critics generally liked the movie.

Two years after the first movie, a sequel called 22 Jump Street came out. The original team – including directors Lord and Miller, and stars Tatum and Hill – all returned. It was also a hit with both critics and audiences, receiving good reviews and making $331 million worldwide.

21 Jump Street Almost Crossed Over With Men in Black

Sony explored several ideas to keep the Jump Street series going after 22 Jump Street. These included a sequel, 23 Jump Street, a spin-off film focused on female leads starring Tiffany Haddish and Awkwafina, and even a combined movie with the Men in Black franchise. In 2015, Lord and Miller officially announced this crossover, nicknamed MIB 23, and James Bobin was set to direct in March 2016.

Sadly, the planned team-up never actually happened. In 2023, one of the creators explained, “It was a great idea, but it probably won’t happen now. It was a really exciting project to explore, though!”

Miller explained that the situation was high-stakes – a huge success would be amazing, but failure could jeopardize two major film series. Despite the pressure, it didn’t work out, but he acknowledged that setbacks are a common part of life.

21 Jump Street and 22 Jump Street are available to stream on Paramount+.
