Superman is arguably the most iconic fictional character of our time. For over 85 years, he’s been a beacon of hope and has defined the superhero genre. While DC Comics has created many memorable stories, most fans and critics agree that Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely’s All-Star Superman, a 2006-2008 series, best captures the essence of the Man of Tomorrow. This story presents a unique take where Superman discovers he has a limited time to live after absorbing too much solar energy, and it’s these moments that have made All-Star Superman a legendary comic book series.
Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely’s twelve-issue run is a definitive Superman story, perfectly capturing what makes the character so enduring after eighty years. Though it focuses on Superman’s final days, it surprisingly became the foundation for many future stories, powerfully exploring themes of heroism, mortality, kindness, understanding, and lasting impact.
7) Earth Q

Okay, so in this film, Superman’s facing his own mortality and naturally, he’s concerned about who will protect Earth after he’s gone. To figure this out, he builds this incredible little universe, Earth Q, using Kryptonian tech. Time moves way faster inside, letting him fast-forward through humanity’s development. What’s amazing is that, even without him, humans still create stories about heroes! It’s a beautiful idea, and it culminates in a scene where a comic book artist in Earth Q draws…Superman! It’s a really clever, self-aware moment that perfectly illustrates how the need for heroes and the idea of hope are just baked into who we are as people, and Superman represents that ideal. It’s a surprisingly profound and moving bit of storytelling.
6) Clark Kent and Lex Luthor in Prison

Clark Kent gets a unique assignment: interviewing Lex Luthor while Luthor is in prison and facing execution. During the interview, Luthor brags and argues that Superman actually harms humanity. The situation turns chaotic when the villain Parasite escapes, causing a riot. Clark subtly uses his superpowers to protect both himself and Luthor from Parasite and the other prisoners, all without revealing his secret identity. This is a clever illustration of how Luthor’s massive ego prevents him from realizing Clark is actually Superman. It also powerfully demonstrates the clear difference between Superman as a hero and Clark Kent as a regular citizen.
5) Superman and Lois Lane’s Date

Knowing his time is limited, Superman wants to say goodbye and share special moments with the people he loves, especially Lois Lane. He finally reveals his secret identity to her and gives her an amazing birthday gift: a serum that gives her Kryptonian superpowers for a day. Together, they experience the thrill of flying, fight crime as a team, and even share a kiss on the moon. It’s a beautiful and touching scene that shows the deep connection between Superman and Lois, and allows Lois to briefly understand what it’s like to see the world through his eyes.
4) Pa Kent’s Death

Jonathan Kent, Superman’s adoptive father, has always been a constant source of love and support. In a poignant flashback, Superman remembers a painful lesson: he can’t save everyone. While dealing with a monster, young Superman witnesses his father collapse from a heart attack. Despite racing to his side, Pa Kent passes away. It’s then revealed that the mysterious stranger present at the scene was actually the present-day Superman, who traveled back in time using a time machine to share a final, bittersweet moment with his father.
3) Superman’s Fate

Even while facing his own death, Superman makes sure the world is safe. After defeating Lex Luthor, an overload of solar energy begins to weaken him. At the same time, the villain Solaris poisons the sun, causing it to fade. As the only one who can save it, Superman performs one final act of heroism: he flies into the heart of the dying sun to restore its power, telling Lois Lane of his love beforehand. Though it appears he has sacrificed himself, it’s revealed Superman is still working tirelessly to keep the sun shining. It’s a moving conclusion that perfectly shows Superman’s dedication to bringing life and hope to everyone.
2) Lex Luthor Sees Everything

The comic All-Star Superman offered a final, meaningful conclusion to the long-standing conflict between Superman and Lex Luthor. Luthor steals a serum originally intended for Lois Lane, gaining Kryptonian powers and escaping prison to challenge Superman. Surprisingly, these new powers give Luthor a glimpse into Superman’s way of seeing the world. He gains enhanced vision, allowing him to perceive the fundamental connections between everything. However, this moment of understanding is cut short when Superman uses a special weapon to quickly drain the serum’s effects, leaving Luthor powerless. In a fit of rage, Luthor claims he could have been a hero, but Superman coldly points out that Luthor could have chosen to help people at any time.
1) Superman Saves Regan

No single moment better captures the essence of Superman – and superheroes in general. While soaring around the globe and battling dangers, Superman overhears a doctor speaking with a young woman named Regan, who is contemplating suicide. We then see Regan on the verge of jumping from a building, but Superman arrives just in time. He reassures her that she’s stronger than she believes and holds her as she breaks down. In just six comic panels, All-Star Superman perfectly illustrates the true value of heroes. Despite his incredible powers, Superman’s greatest strength has always been his empathy and his ability to give people hope for a brighter future.
