10 DC Heroes Who Never Had a Bad Costume

DC Comics pioneered the concept of superheroes, and with that, established the basic look for their costumes. Examining the original heroes from the Golden Age reveals the origins of many costume trends we still see today. While DC has consistently created memorable costumes over the years, not every design is a success. Some simply don’t suit the character, and are quickly forgotten. However, certain heroes have managed to avoid that fate, maintaining consistently strong and iconic looks.

These DC heroes are known for consistently amazing costumes. While some outfits are better than others, they’ve never had a truly bad look. In fact, many consider them to be the most stylish heroes in DC Comics history.

10) John Stewart

Over the years, Earth has had several Green Lanterns, but John Stewart consistently has the most iconic and stylish look. While other human Lanterns have had good costumes, none have reached the same level of recognition as Stewart’s. He began with the standard Green Lantern uniform, then moved to a design reminiscent of those seen on Deep Space Nine, and most recently, debuted another excellent costume. Even versions of John Stewart from alternate universes maintain a fantastic sense of style. He always looks incredible, and it doesn’t seem that will ever change.

9) Donna Troy

Donna Troy is a famously complicated character in the DC Universe, but her costume design has consistently been a highlight. While her red bodysuit and black star outfit are standouts, all of her looks are well-designed, even those like the Troia and New 52 villain versions. It’s no surprise that two legendary comic artists, George Perez and Phil Jimenez, have both loved working with her – if the people who create iconic looks think she’s great, they’re probably right.

8) Green Arrow

Green Arrow is a DC Comics icon, and his striking appearance has played a big part in his popularity. Though his very first costume wasn’t much to look at, almost every outfit he’s worn since has been fantastic. From the Silver Age design to the look from the Longbow Hunters storyline and even the ’90s version, Green Arrow has consistently had great costumes. In the 21st century, he’s continued to sport some truly impressive looks. Simply put, Ollie always looks good.

7) Wally West

It’s fair to say all three modern Flashes – Barry, Wally, and Bart – deserve recognition. While Barry and Bart’s costumes from the New 52 era weren’t very flattering, Wally actually has a consistently strong track record. He didn’t appear in the New 52 initially, so all his costumes are well-regarded. He started with a miniature Flash suit, then moved to the classic yellow and red Kid Flash look, and eventually became the main Flash, modifying the suit with darker colors, a new belt, and white lenses. His ‘Rebirth’ costume was a clever nod to his Kid Flash days – a subtle move by DC’s Dan DiDio, who preferred Wally as Kid Flash – and even his ‘DC All-In’ suit looked great. Overall, Wally’s costume history shows he has a great sense of what makes a superhero look fantastic.

6) Raven

Raven’s initial design, created by George Perez, immediately made her popular, largely due to her dramatic, flowing cape which hinted at her reserved personality. Since then, her costumes have mostly been variations on that original look. While colors sometimes change – her white costume is a great example – the core design of a large cloak paired with a bodysuit has remained consistent. Most artists recognize that this combination works well and haven’t strayed far from it.

5) Alan Scott

Alan Scott is a classic comic book hero, and his first costume is particularly memorable. While he hasn’t had many different looks throughout the years, they’ve all been well-designed. He debuted with a red and green suit featuring a green and purple cape, and later updated his style with a look from the 1990s, a costume from the Kingdom Come series, and another version from the New 52 Earth-2 comics. All three of these later costumes are excellent, but his original remains the most iconic and enduring.

4) Supergirl

Supergirl is a major DC Comics character, and over the years, she’s sported some memorable outfits. Her initial costume was a feminine take on Superman’s, simply swapping his red elements for blue. In the 1970s, she got a looser-fitting top that looked great. The 1980s brought a modernized look, complete with a headband and updated cape and S-shield. While the Supergirl from the Matrix storyline initially wore the classic suit, it later evolved to include a white top. The Cir-El Supergirl had a very unique costume, which helped it stand out. When she returned in the 2000s, her costume was a more contemporary and streamlined version of the original. The ‘New 52’ costume was decent, but her Red Lantern outfit was a real highlight. She’s continued to evolve her look, and her most recent costume is another fantastic take on the classic design.

3) Dick Grayson

As a huge fan, I’ve always loved Dick Grayson’s look! It all started with the classic Robin suit – seriously, it’s one of the most recognizable costumes ever. Then when he became Nightwing, his first costume was definitely a product of its time, but still cool. The second one was good, but the third Nightwing suit, the one he wore when he got his own comic series, was perfect. He’s stuck with variations of that design ever since, like the awesome red and black one and his Spyral outfit. Honestly, Dick just always looks fantastic, and even his older Robin costumes from the Bronze Age are surprisingly great!

2) Batman

Batman is DC Comics’ most iconic hero, and he’s always had memorable costumes. What’s interesting is that his look hasn’t changed drastically over the years. While there have been variations – often just tweaks to the logo or colors of his suit, cape, and mask – the core elements have remained consistent. He’s sported black suits, blue and gray, and combinations of black and gray, and even his more outlandish Silver Age designs work because, well, he’s Batman! Ultimately, Batman simply looks great in any outfit (with the possible exception of when Jean Paul Valley wore the suit).

1) Superman

Like Batman, Superman consistently sports iconic costumes, and they’re all generally well-designed. While some dislike the electric blue suit, it’s surprisingly good. The black ‘resurrection’ suit is a standout, and his casual look with a t-shirt and jeans (from certain comic runs) is excellent. Even the Kryptonian armor, though a bit of a strange concept, isn’t terrible. The suit from Superman and the Authority is arguably one of his best, and the designs from both Earth-Two timelines are fantastic. Plus, there are all the amazing alternate reality costumes. It seems Superman has a hidden talent for fashion!
