The first episode of Saturday Night Live UK, a British adaptation of the popular American show Saturday Night Live, premiered on Sky One on March 21st. While critics haven’t been impressed, citing weak jokes and poor impressions, the show did receive a surprising endorsement: U.S. President Donald Trump.
Like many episodes of Saturday Night Live, this week’s SNL UK began with a political sketch. George Fouracres played British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and Hammed Animashaun played Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy. The sketch showed Starmer as anxious and unable to make decisions, particularly when it came to calling Donald Trump. He worried aloud, “What if Donald shouts at me? What do I say, Lammy?” The highlight of the sketch was when Starmer answered the phone, heard Trump say “Hello,” and immediately hung up, panicked. He then exclaimed, “Oh, that scary, wonderful president! Why is he so hard to talk to?”
Trump seemed amused by the sketch and shared the first part of it on his Truth Social account without adding any comments. You can watch the complete sketch here:
So, I saw this sketch Trump shared on Truth Social, and the way he posted it is pretty interesting. It ends with Keir Starmer saying he’ll “do anything, except take a stand.” Apparently, Trump didn’t share the whole thing, though. He cut out a bit where Starmer, in a voice note, jokingly suggests they take a break like in Friends. Starmer stammers out, “Not forever, just until you’ve got all this war out of your system.” Then, it gets really bizarre – Starmer basically says, “Look, we want different things. You clearly want to start World War III, and that’s… great for you. Go for it! But we can’t be involved, though you can still use our naval bases whenever you like.” It’s a really strange piece of political satire, and Trump’s edit definitely changes the message.
I’ve been following the situation in Iran closely, and it’s become clear the UK has allowed the US to use its bases in support of the ongoing military actions, which have been happening alongside Israeli strikes since late February. Interestingly, though, the UK hasn’t joined the US in sending ships to secure the Strait of Hormuz, despite a request from Trump. Honestly, this whole situation feels ripe for satire, and I can already imagine both versions of Saturday Night Live having a field day with it. It’s funny to remember that Trump himself actually hosted SNL twice, even though he’s spent years publicly criticizing the show, calling it everything from ‘unwatchable’ to ‘boring.’ Currently, James Austin Johnson does a fantastic Trump impression on the American SNL, and I expect we’ll be seeing a lot more of it.
The first episode of SNL UK featured Tina Fey, a former cast member of the original Saturday Night Live, and many critics felt she was the highlight of the show. The episode also included brief appearances by Nicola Coughlan from Bridgerton, Irish comedian Graham Norton, and actor Michael Cera.

Jamie Dornan, known for Fifty Shades of Grey, and Riz Ahmed, star of Sound of Metal, will host the next two episodes of SNL UK. You can watch them on Sky at 10 p.m. GMT. While not everyone loved the first episode, the show has plenty of time to improve – Saturday Night Live has been running for 51 seasons and isn’t perfect all the time.
