Sony has reportedly told developers they’ll be dropping the “PSN” (PlayStation Network) name later this year, and clues about this change have been visible for some time.
Last night, when PlayStation Network briefly experienced an outage, we checked the PSN Service Status page for details and discovered it’s now called the PlayStation Service Status page.
Actually, that specific page doesn’t mention PlayStation Network at all. But that’s not how we recall things happening!
We used the Wayback Machine to see when this change first happened, and discovered the PlayStation Network branding was removed late last year.
For instance, back in October 2025, the page was called “PSN Service Status” and immediately identified itself as being about the PlayStation Network. However, all of that information had disappeared by December 2025.
Okay, so we’ve all noticed this issue for a bit now. It looks like the company is finally getting around to telling developers about it, which is good – hopefully, it means we won’t see this old wording popping up in any new games coming out. I’m glad they’re addressing it!
This isn’t a huge surprise, but even during the recent problems, a lot of people were still searching online for ‘PSN Down’ when they couldn’t connect to PlayStation Network.
As a fan, I’m really curious to see if this phrase will just stick around even if Sony stops using it themselves. It’s one of those things that might just become part of the culture, you know?
