The movie ‘Project Hail Mary‘ had a fantastic opening weekend and is now Amazon’s most successful film debut ever.
Ryan Gosling’s new movie topped the global box office this weekend, earning $140.9 million and becoming the year’s biggest opening weekend to date.
The film had a bigger opening weekend than any other movie on Amazon since the company bought MGM in 2022. That acquisition also gave Amazon the rights to popular franchises like James Bond and The Pink Panther.
I’m so excited about Project Hail Mary! It’s based on the amazing book by Andy Weir, and it tells the story of Ryland Grace, played by Ryan Gosling. He’s a former science teacher who wakes up on a spaceship with no memory of who he is or why he’s there. Turns out, he’s on a really dangerous mission – a one-way trip to save Earth! There’s this thing called ‘Astrophage’ that’s basically eating the sun, and he’s humanity’s last hope to stop it.
Andy Weir’s book, The Martian, became a 2015 movie starring Matt Damon. Damon’s performance earned him an Oscar nomination and a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor.
This new movie is one of more than a dozen that Amazon plans to release in theaters each year before streaming them on Prime Video.

When Project Hail Mary was released, it was highly praised by critics and expected to sell at least $70 million worth of copies. It actually exceeded that expectation, selling 15 percent more.
I’m so excited about this new movie because it’s directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller! Those guys are amazing – they made Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, The Lego Movie, 21 Jump Street, and the Spider-Verse films, so I know it’s going to be really creative and fun.
Before its release, Project Hail Mary was expected to be the year’s biggest film debut. However, Scream 7, released last month, has become a massive success, earning $193.8 million and becoming the highest-grossing film in the Scream series.
