As a huge fantasy fan, I’ve noticed we’re getting so many incredible, big-budget fantasy shows now, really proving what the genre can do. But it’s cool to look back and realize some of the stuff from the 2000s still really holds up! That decade was a sweet spot – with things like the Harry Potter films and Lord of the Rings trilogy proving people were really craving these kinds of stories, and a few shows stepped up to deliver.
As a longtime movie and TV fan, I remember the early 2000s being a bit of a mixed bag for fantasy. Studios weren’t always keen on investing big money into the genre, so a lot of projects ended up looking cheap or feeling rushed. You could really see some shows and films just trying to copy the success of others – it happened a lot after Game of Thrones too, but it was even more obvious back then! Luckily, there were a few gems from that decade that still hold up beautifully today, and I still love revisiting them.
5) The Vampire Diaries

Even though it’s not flawless, The Vampire Diaries remains incredibly rewatchable, with fans consistently revisiting the world of Mystic Falls. The show’s early seasons are especially strong within the vampire genre. While it can be a bit cheesy, The Vampire Diaries embraces that quality, which is part of what makes it so enjoyable. The show found its niche and stayed true to it, making it a consistently comforting and entertaining watch. Surprisingly, despite being released in the late 2000s, the show’s story, special effects, and acting haven’t aged poorly, making it easy to binge-watch for the first time or revisit again and again.
4) Pushing Daisies

Despite only lasting two seasons and being somewhat overlooked when it originally aired, there’s renewed interest in bringing back the fantasy show Pushing Daisies. The people who made the show, along with its fans, are eager to create a third season, even after twenty years. Pushing Daisies beautifully combines fantasy, mystery, and romance in a way that’s both delightful and thought-provoking. Because the show wasn’t reliant on flashy special effects, it still looks great today. Plus, its exploration of life’s big questions makes it just as enjoyable for new viewers as it is for longtime fans.
3) Merlin

Despite ending in 2012, BBC’s Merlin still has a devoted fanbase who continue to enjoy it. While it might not be the most talked-about fantasy show today, it remains surprisingly good. The actors still deliver strong performances, and the chemistry between them is as captivating as ever. The storylines are still fun, with characters you can connect with and enjoyable standalone episodes. Though the special effects haven’t aged perfectly, they’re not distracting enough to ruin the experience. Overall, Merlin is entertaining enough to easily forgive any dated elements, and its ending remains powerfully emotional, even after all these years.
2) Supernatural

While Supernatural ran for an impressive 15 seasons (2005-2020), it feels more like a show of the 2010s than the 2000s. However, the first five seasons, which aired between 2005 and 2010, are particularly strong and still enjoyable today. The show’s early episodes, focused on individual monsters, haven’t aged badly, and the core relationship between Sam and Dean, along with the larger battle between good and evil, remains compelling. It’s no surprise the show still has a dedicated fanbase, with many hoping for a potential Season 16 even now.
1) Avatar: The Last Airbender

Even though Avatar: The Last Airbender first aired 21 years ago, it still holds up incredibly well. It’s better than many fantasy shows being made today, filled with a rare combination of warmth and appeal. The series offers a timeless story that feels hopeful and is easy to revisit again and again. The animation is still fantastic, making the action and bending techniques as thrilling as ever. Plus, the writing remains strong, with both the emotional and funny scenes continuing to resonate with viewers. It’s hard to find anything wrong with Avatar: The Last Airbender, and its age certainly isn’t a factor in any minor shortcomings.
