For the last ten years, Simon Farnaby has become known as one of the UK’s most consistently talented screenwriters. He’s been a key writer on the popular sitcom Ghosts, and he co-wrote the hugely successful films Paddington 2 and Wonka with Paul King – and that’s just a glimpse of his work.
Farnaby’s newest film project reimagines Enid Blyton’s classic ‘The Magic Faraway Tree’ books as a modern, fantastical adventure.
The film boasts an impressive cast, including Rebecca Ferguson, Andrew Garfield, Jessica Gunning, and Lenny Henry, among other major stars. Ahead of its release, Claire Foy gave an exclusive interview to TopMob about the project.
You know, when I was thinking about Farnaby’s take on the story, what really struck me was how seamlessly he blended his own comedic style with the spirit of the original Blyton book. It just felt natural and really enhanced the whole thing.

Humor is incredibly effective, and this project was funny right from the start, she said. She also appreciated how the show realistically portrayed the relationships between parents and children, finding it surprisingly comforting.
It didn’t feel like the film was trying to show a perfect family or suggest an ideal life. Instead, it honestly depicted the challenges everyone faces, and that’s what it aimed to explore.
She described the world depicted in the film as chaotic and difficult to break into, and commended Farnaby for creating truly unique and memorable magical characters.
“I just think he did such an incredible job,” she continued. “He just is the funniest man!”
Nicola Coughlan, who portrays the fairy Silky in the movie, agreed with Foy, saying she was very eager to join the project as soon as she learned Farnaby was writing it.
She declared Paddington 2 to be one of the greatest films of all time. She also enjoys movies with strong comedic casts. She recalled asking the director, Ben Gregor, about filming with the CGI character Silky, worried she’d be acting alone in a studio. He assured her that wouldn’t be the case.
I really enjoyed exploring the concept of building a world where people genuinely love their lives, even though their children are constantly facing serious risks. It was a compelling dynamic to write!
Surprisingly, neither Coughlan nor Foy had read Blyton’s books as children, and Coughlan thought this might have actually helped her performance.
She said it was actually helpful not knowing a lot beforehand, because too much information can be overwhelming.
It’s amazing how much childhood books resonate with people. When I tell people I’m working on this movie, those who read the book as children get really excited – it’s like they’re instantly transported back to being a kid again.
Honestly, the role was both incredibly exciting and a little daunting. If I’d known exactly what I was getting into with Silky beforehand, I think I might have been completely overwhelmed. It was actually a relief to approach it with a fresh perspective, without overthinking it.
Foy explained that the story feels different depending on how you experience it as a child – whether it’s read aloud or read independently. She believes its fantastical and unusual nature means everyone will have a unique understanding of it.
It’s fascinating to hear what people pictured Moonface (Nonso Anozie) looking like, and then see how the filmmakers brought that to life. It really shows how everyone’s ideas and imagination come together to create something new.
The Magic Faraway Tree is released in UK cinemas on Friday 27 March.
