Every March 25th is Tolkien Reading Day, a celebration of the works of the famous fantasy author J.R.R. Tolkien. This year’s celebration is particularly special because it marks the 25th anniversary of the first Lord of the Rings movie, The Fellowship of the Ring. Beyond the anniversary, fans have even more to look forward to: a new Lord of the Rings film is in the works, following The Hunt for Gollum, and there’s new merchandise available. Plus, the popular Lord of the Rings video game is getting an upgraded version for the Nintendo Switch 2.
The relaxing game Tales of the Shire had a rocky beginning. It launched in July 2025 after several delays, and many players thought it needed further refinement. However, it’s gained a loyal following among fans of cozy games and Tolkien’s work—including me! Now, an updated version for the Switch 2 is available today, coinciding with Tolkien Reading Day.
Tales of the Shire Gets Free Switch 2 Upgrade

Tales of the Shire is a relaxing life simulation game set in the charming world of the Shire. You create your own Hobbit character and start a new life in Bywater, working with beloved characters to help the village thrive. You’ll build relationships with the locals by gathering resources, growing crops, and cooking delicious food. The game features a heartwarming story with some surprise appearances from familiar faces. While the graphics can be a point of contention, especially on the Nintendo Switch, the potential upgrade with the new Switch 2 is generating a lot of excitement.
Similar to other games on the new Switch 2, this version of Tales of the Shire features better graphics and smoother performance. The game’s beautiful watercolor art style will really shine with the sharper resolution, and even longtime fans will appreciate the improved frame rates. You can see how it looks in the trailer below, which showcases the charming world of Bywater.
Since its release, Tales of the Shire has received several updates alongside improvements for the Switch 2. This version should be the most polished one so far. However, unlike games like Animal Crossing: New Horizons, it won’t support the new Joy-Con 2 mouse controls for decorating.
Tales of the Shire is the first Lord of the Rings game specifically made for the new Switch 2. Hopefully, this means other popular games like Shadow of Mordor might also come to the Switch family of consoles, now that the Switch 2 has more powerful hardware. For now, though, fans of Tales of the Shire can enjoy playing it again.
The Nintendo eShop now has a version of Tales of the Shire for the Switch 2. If you already own the game, upgrading to the Switch 2 version is free. New players can purchase Tales of the Shire for the Switch 2 for $34.99, the same price as the original Switch version.
