Pokémon Champions Finally Fixes Something That Was Missing From Legends: Z-A

While Pokémon Legends: Z-A made significant changes to traditional Pokémon battles, Pokémon Champions brings back the classic turn-based system. Players will once again be able to battle other trainers online with a wide selection of Pokémon. The recent announcement of Pokémon Champions‘ release date also revealed the return of a feature that wasn’t included in Legends: Z-A, specifically for Pokémon that first appeared in that game.

Pokémon battles are more complicated than just choosing moves that are strong against your opponent’s type. Over the years, the series has added many layers of strategy. A Pokémon’s stats, how well it’s trained, and even its unique abilities all play a significant role. Things like boosting damage with same-type attacks and utilizing a Pokémon’s special ability can heavily influence a battle, and the competitive scene in Pokémon Champions shows just how much battles have evolved beyond basic type matchups.

Mega Evolutions From Pokémon Legends: Z-A Lacked Abilities Standard To The Series

Pokémon Legends: Z-A featured innovative battle systems, but the Pokémon didn’t have the usual abilities found in the main series games. This was a trend seen in both Legends: Z-A and Legends: Arceus, which both altered gameplay to compensate for missing features. Now, with Pokémon Champions, those familiar abilities are returning, along with all the standard battle mechanics players have enjoyed for years.

When the release date for the game was announced in April 2026, it was revealed that Pokémon appearing in Legends: Z-A will receive new abilities when used in Pokémon Champions. This primarily affects the Mega Evolutions designed for Legends: Z-A, as the standard Pokémon from that game already had abilities established in other titles. Like Mega Evolutions from the Gen 6 games, Pokémon Champions appears to give Pokémon from Legends: Z-A additional abilities when they undergo transformation.

Players are curious about which abilities Mega Pokémon from previous games will have in Legends: Z-A, or if the game will introduce completely new ones. Since Mega Evolutions are typically very powerful, they’re likely to be a major part of Pokémon Champions, a battle-focused game. Luckily, we already know some answers – the abilities of three new Mega Evolutions from Legends: Z-A have been revealed before the game even comes out.

Pokémon Champions Will Give New Mega Forms Abilities As They’re Transferred From The Spin-Off

Three Pokémon originally found only in Legends: Z-A are getting new abilities in Pokémon Champions. These abilities are actually the Mega Evolutions for the starters from that game: Mega Meganium, Mega Feraligatr, and Mega Emboar. The simplest of these new abilities belongs to Mega Emboar: Mold Breaker. This ability lets Mega Emboar’s moves bypass certain opponent abilities that could otherwise reduce their damage or prevent them from working.

Now that the initial Mega Evolution starters have new abilities, it’s likely all Mega Evolutions returning from Legends: Z-A will also get updated skills in Pokémon Champions. However, Mega Evolution still has restrictions: each Pokémon can only Mega Evolve once per battle. Plus, a special stone is required to trigger the transformation, which will limit how frequently Mega Pokémon from Legends: Z-A can be used in Pokémon Champions.

Some Abilities Of Legends: Z-A Mega Evolutions Already Look Incredibly Strong

While Mega Emboar’s Mold Breaker ability will make it a strong competitor, other newly revealed Mega Evolution abilities in Pokémon Champions look even more impactful. Mega Meganium, for instance, gets a new ability called Mega Sol, which essentially creates permanent harsh sunlight. This lets it use moves like Solarbeam instantly, without needing to use Sunny Day first or wait for the move to charge.

Mega Feraligatr receives a new ability called Dragonize, which transforms Normal-type attacks into Dragon-type moves when it evolves. This also increases the power of Dragon-type moves by 20%, making Mega Feraligatr, with its Water/Dragon typing, incredibly strong against other Pokémon. Already known for its extremely high Attack stat and moves like Return, Double-Edge, and Dragon Dance that further boost its attack power, Mega Feraligatr is set to be a dominant force in battle.

If the upcoming game Legends: Z-A introduces new abilities for Mega Evolution Pokémon, some could become incredibly powerful. It’s even possible that top players, known as Pokémon Champions, could design new abilities for existing Mega Evolutions, making the already strong Pokémon even more formidable and creating a more competitive battling environment.
