Andy Muschietti‘s 2017 film, It, became the most successful movie adaptation of Stephen King’s novel ever made. Following the release of the sequel, It Chapter Two, Muschietti hinted at a longer, extended cut. Now, after several years, the director has shared a new update on that project.
I was really hoping to hear some news about that It supercut, and Andy Muschietti recently talked about it while promoting his new film, They Will Kill You. He was chatting with his sister, Barbara – they work together a lot – and when asked why the supercut hasn’t happened yet, Barbara basically said it’s just been a matter of finding the time. They’ve been super busy with other things, especially getting the It prequel series, Welcome to Derry, off the ground. That project took priority, according to Andy.
It: Welcome to Derry Takes Priority
He explained that getting the show made was more important than creating a longer, combined cut of existing footage. While they could ask the studio for help with other projects, the timing was uncertain. They’ve already fully committed to making a second season of Welcome to Derry, and have other film ideas in development, but they plan to move forward with everything.
Although there isn’t a specific date yet, director Andy Muschietti is optimistic that the extended cut of It will eventually be released. Fans will likely have to wait at least seven years, as this is when he first began discussing his plans for the project. This six-hour supercut would combine both It and It: Chapter Two, featuring deleted scenes and entirely new footage filmed just for this version.
The first It movie earned over $700 million globally, making it one of the highest-grossing horror films of all time. It: Chapter Two followed with around $460 million, and The Green Mile came in third with approximately $286 million. Considering how well the It films performed, Warner Bros. will likely support director Andy Muschietti’s plans to create a combined cut of the two movies when he has the opportunity.
It: Welcome to Derry Might Last Three Seasons
The biggest obstacle to creating a longer “supercut” of the It story is currently the focus on It: Welcome to Derry. Although HBO hasn’t officially renewed the show for a second season, the director has confirmed it’s happening. He’s previously discussed a plan for the series to span three seasons, and it seems he won’t seriously consider the supercut until Welcome to Derry is completed.
Everyone involved is dedicated to making it happen – both the team and the studio. We’re just waiting for the right story and resources to bring it to life, as Barbara Muschietti recently explained.
It: Welcome to Derry is streaming on HBO Max.
