6 Brand New HBO Harry Potter Scenes That Were Not In The Sorcerer’s Stone Movie

We’ve finally gotten a sneak peek at the new Harry Potter TV series, and it looks like HBO is delivering on its promise to create something more expansive than the films. While the original Harry Potter movies are classics and will always be cherished, they couldn’t include everything from the books. The great thing about a TV series is that it has more time to tell the story. HBO isn’t as limited in its adaptation, and that’s been a key part of building excitement for the show. The first trailer gives us a taste of what to expect, and it looks promising.

Although the trailer for the first season of Harry Potter (titled Philosopher’s Stone everywhere except the US) retells familiar events from the Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone movie, it promises a much richer experience. The two-minute clip revisited iconic moments like Harry getting his Hogwarts letter and the Sorting Hat ceremony, but also showed several completely new scenes. These additions appear to be taken directly from the original Harry Potter books, which is a welcome sign for fans.

6. Harry Getting Bullied By Dudley At School

The movie Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone clearly showed Dudley as a spoiled and mean boy who was unkind to Harry. Actor Harry Melling portrayed Dudley as someone who would lock Harry in a cupboard, yell at animals, and always demand more gifts, even going so far as to eat Harry’s birthday cake. While already unlikeable, the book Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone revealed an even harsher side of Dudley, describing how he physically bullied Harry throughout his childhood.

The new HBO series, Harry Potter, introduces Amos Kitson as Dudley Dursley. The first trailer shows him bullying Harry (played by Dominic McLaughlin) at school, a scene taken directly from the books. In the novels, Harry describes how going to a regular school didn’t offer any escape from Dudley’s abuse, as Dudley frequently used his friends to torment him. Harry even remembers one instance of fleeing from Dudley and inexplicably ending up on the school roof. Though this specific moment isn’t in the trailer, it’s likely to appear in the first season.

5. Petunia Cutting Harry’s Hair

The beginning of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone carefully shows how special Harry is. One detail mentioned repeatedly is his messy, unruly black hair. His aunt Petunia constantly told him to comb it, but he said it never helped. Eventually, she became so frustrated that she cut his hair very short. The next morning, to Petunia’s shock, Harry’s hair had completely grown back overnight.

The first trailer for the upcoming HBO series shows a lengthy scene of Bel Powley, as Petunia Dursley, harshly cutting Harry’s hair. She does it with a disturbing amount of force, clearly hurting him. While she cuts his hair, she repeatedly tells Harry he’s not special, seemingly trying to suppress his magical abilities. When the series begins, we’ll likely see Petunia’s anger flare up as Harry’s hair quickly grows back, proving her wrong.

4. Herbology Class

Throughout the Harry Potter books, Harry, Ron, and Hermione attend Herbology class each year at Hogwarts. But the movies don’t often show them in the greenhouses. Many movie fans mistakenly believe the course started in Chamber of Secrets because that’s when we first meet Professor Sprout, played by Miriam Margolyes. The new HBO series is expected to fix this misunderstanding and accurately portray when the characters began studying Herbology.

I just watched the first trailer for the new Harry Potter series, and wow, the visuals are stunning! We get a good look at Harry, Ron (played by Alistair Stout), and Hermione (Arabella Stanton), along with their classmates, all looking amazed in a truly massive greenhouse. Honestly, it’s a huge step up from the greenhouses we saw in Chamber of Secrets – it actually reminded me a lot of the sprawling greenhouses from Hogwarts Legacy. There was even a quick peek at Sirine Saba as Professor Sprout, which was exciting to see!

3. Gryffindor Vs. Hufflepuff Quidditch Match

Quidditch is a major part of the Harry Potter stories, so it was exciting to see a preview of Harry’s first Quidditch games in HBO’s new trailer. We see Harry, dressed in his uniform and carrying his broom, heading to the pitch. While the uniforms and Harry’s Nimbus 2000 look a bit different than we might expect, the most interesting detail is that the game shown is between Gryffindor and Hufflepuff.

As a huge Harry Potter fan, I always loved seeing Harry’s first Quidditch match against Slytherin in the first movie – the one where he almost falls off his broom but then miraculously catches the Golden Snitch with his mouth to win! It’s exciting to hear the new TV show is going to show us his next game, against Hufflepuff. Apparently, Ron and Hermione are convinced Snape is biased and out to get Harry, especially since he volunteers to be the referee. The story is Harry manages to catch the Snitch super quickly – in just five minutes – basically to save himself and make sure Gryffindor doesn’t get penalized!

2. Snowball Fights On The Hogwarts Grounds

The first Harry Potter movie beautifully captured the magic of Hogwarts and made it seem like the perfect place to spend Christmas. Visually, it was stunning. Unfortunately, the movie’s limited runtime meant scenes of Harry enjoying the holidays with the Weasley family had to be left out. Luckily, the trailer for Harry Potter season 1 shows some of that missing winter fun, including Harry and his friends having a snowball fight at Hogwarts. There’s even a charming clip of Hagrid (played by Nick Frost) making snow angels!

In the first Harry Potter book, a snowball fight between Harry and the Weasleys includes a mischievous prank on Professor Quirrell. Fred and George magically made snowballs fly at the back of his turban, which greatly upset him. It wasn’t until the end of the book that readers discovered Lord Voldemort was hiding under the turban, revealing just how daring—and potentially dangerous—the twins’ joke really was.

1. Roasting Treats On The Common Room Fire

A new scene in the first trailer for HBO’s Harry Potter series shows Harry and Ron happily toasting marshmallows by the Gryffindor common room fireplace. This moment doesn’t appear in either the Sorcerer’s Stone movie or the original books. While not directly from the source material, the scene captures the warm, cheerful spirit of similar moments that were left out of the Harry Potter films.

The Harry Potter books were full of warm, comfortable scenes of Harry, Ron, and Hermione hanging out in the Gryffindor common room – playing games, doing homework, chatting, and enjoying the antics of Fred and George. While the Harry Potter movies showed some of these moments, they often had to focus on moving the main story forward. It was a loss, because those everyday scenes were what truly made Hogwarts feel like a home. It seems the new HBO Harry Potter series is trying to recreate that cozy atmosphere in its first season.
