So, Sony just closed down Dark Outlaw Games, which was a new studio they’d just started. It was led by Jason Blundell, who a lot of us gamers know from his work on Call of Duty at Treyarch. Pretty surprising news, honestly.
Despite what many people believe, the game isn’t a live service title, as confirmed by Junior Game Designer JCBackfire during a Twitch stream.
Blundell explained that the team is saddened by the project’s cancellation, noting they were creating a truly exceptional game.
They didn’t share details about the project, wanting to maintain a good relationship with Sony, but emphasized it was a game fans would have loved, and they were very disappointed it didn’t happen.
However, they emphasized they have no negative feelings towards PlayStation, explaining the cancellation was simply due to challenging market conditions.
Blundell said that while priorities shifted over time, the project they were working on would have really pleased fans.
This is the second project led by a key figure from Call of Duty Zombies that hasn’t launched successfully while under Sony’s guidance.
Sony initially funded Deviation Games, but later stopped providing financial support for their sci-fi game. As a result, former Deviation Games lead, Michael Blundell, founded Dark Outlaw Games, which Sony acquired as a first-party studio last year.
PlayStation recently described the studio as working on something that blends different genres, but that’s all we know for now. We expect to learn more details about the project soon, as information often becomes public eventually.
Considering the studio was likely very small, it probably needed a significant amount of funding to launch successfully.
Given the nature of the economy right now, we can understand Sony feeling a little gun shy.
