For a long time, live-action versions of anime were often dreaded by fans, with past attempts like Dragon Ball Evolution, Ghost in the Shell, and Cowboy Bebop receiving harsh criticism. Many thought it was impossible to successfully bring anime to life in a live-action format. However, recent shows like One Piece and Avatar: The Last Airbender have changed that perception, proving that faithful adaptations are possible. Now, a classic anime is getting a live-action revival – City Hunter is returning on Netflix, bringing the action-packed world back to life!
Netflix announced this week that a sequel to the live-action film City Hunter is coming in 2027. The first film, released in 2024, was based on the popular City Hunter anime and manga, which originally began in Weekly Shonen Jump in 1985. This isn’t the first live-action adaptation of City Hunter; several films and TV shows have previously brought the story to life. For the sequel, Ryohei Suzukei will reprise his role as Ryo Saeba, and Misato Morita will return as his partner, Kaori Makimura. Fumiko Kimura is also back as detective Saeko Nogami, and Keiichiro Shiraki will once again direct.
City Hunter Hunts The City Once Again
Ryohei Suzukei, the star of City Hunter, expressed his excitement about the sequel and shared his enthusiasm with fans. He explained that the new installment is possible thanks to the support of those who enjoyed the first film, for which he is very grateful. He and the team are once again working with Tsukasa Hojo’s original story, which is beloved by fans worldwide, and he feels a strong sense of responsibility and determination as they begin filming. While the first film showed how Ryo and Kaori met, this sequel promises to be the most classic City Hunter experience yet.
The popular City Hunter series has been adapted into several anime movies and TV shows over the years. The most recent anime installment, City Hunter: Angel Dust (2023), retold the story from the final part of the original manga. Since then, the studio Sunrise hasn’t announced any plans for a new anime series, but the franchise has gained renewed attention through its live-action films. A sequel, City Hunter 2, is planned for release in 2027, which promises to be a great year for live-action anime adaptations.
