There Should Be No Debate That These 3 Disney Live-Action Remakes Are Actually Great

Disney is famous for its classic animated movies, and many people are discovering them now through live-action versions. This trend began in 2010 with Alice in Wonderland, and since then, Disney has released 21 live-action remakes, including popular titles like Cinderella, Aladdin, The Lion King, and Pete’s Dragon. While these remakes often spark discussion, three of them truly stand out as excellent films.

3. Beauty and the Beast

The classic Beauty and the Beast is a beloved Disney animated film, so there was a lot of excitement—and expectation—surrounding the new version. While opinions on the remake are mixed, it remains one of Disney’s strongest live-action adaptations so far.

This list highlights two important improvements in the live-action Beauty and the Beast. The film fleshes out the backstories of Maurice and Belle, giving us a better understanding of who they are before the story begins. This added detail also allows The Beast’s character development to feel more natural and believable.

The live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast includes Be Our Guest, which, while different from the animated version, is still a highlight. The film also adds three new songs that each enhance the story. “How Does a Moment Last Forever” is both beautiful and revealing, and “Days in the Sun” helps viewers connect with the castle’s inhabitants. “Evermore” gives the Beast a powerful moment as the story builds to its climax. Combined with its impressive visuals and beloved magical scenes, this remake easily earns its place as a standout film.

2. The Jungle Book

Although Beauty and the Beast was a huge success in theaters, The Jungle Book was actually the first live-action remake to really prove how well these films could perform and attract a new audience. It demonstrated the potential of reimagining classic stories for a modern generation.

The new Jungle Book improves upon the original by simplifying the plot, creating a visually impressive world with modern special effects, and developing deeper, more engaging relationships between the characters. Everything comes together seamlessly. While the original film had a more relaxed feel, the remake adds a significant level of excitement and intensity to the story, even while maintaining some lightheartedness.

The connection between Mowgli and his wolf pack is immediately compelling, and the constant threat of Shere Khan adds significant tension throughout the story, making the climax even more impactful. Baloo is wonderfully portrayed, and both Bagheera and Shere Khan have been thoughtfully updated, enriching their characters and the narrative. This version builds upon the strengths of the original, which is why audiences have been so excited to revisit this world.

1. Christopher Robin

Live-action remakes often face criticism, with many asking why they’re made at all or arguing that they should offer something new instead of simply copying the original. This criticism often focuses on the idea of remakes themselves, rather than the quality of the film. However, Christopher Robin broke the mold. It delivered a movie that truly felt like Winnie the Pooh, but told a fresh and touching story set within the familiar world of the Hundred Acre Wood.

Christopher Robin tells the story of a grown-up version of himself, facing difficult choices in his family and work life. Ewan McGregor powerfully portrays this character, showing how he’s lost sight of what truly matters. Then, Winnie the Pooh arrives, and through a mix of playful antics and surprisingly wise words, he helps Christopher remember the happiness he once felt.

One of the most genuinely moving moments in the film happens as the third act begins, when a sad Christopher tells Pooh he feels lost. Pooh immediately responds with, “But I found you, didn’t I?” and gives him a hug – and yes, I’ve watched that scene countless times and cried every time. While there’s definitely a sentimental feeling when dealing with a beloved character like Winnie the Pooh, the film is so honest and heartfelt that it doesn’t even matter. Christopher Robin may not have been a huge box office hit, but it’s easily one of Disney’s best live-action remakes, and I believe it will remain a favorite for years to come.
