I’ve always been captivated by Sauron as a villain in The Lord of the Rings. He’s been truly frightening since I first read Tolkien’s books, and that intensity carried right through to Peter Jackson’s films—and everything that’s come since! Watching the original trilogy, it honestly felt like defeating him was almost impossible. It took a massive effort, bringing together all sorts of people and creatures from across Middle-earth, and even then, it was a really close call!
It seems almost impossible that any single character could defeat him. But within both the movies and the books, a few individuals had a real chance. Here are the top 5 characters from Lord of the Rings who, considering their abilities and stories, might actually have been able to overcome the Dark Lord.
Elendil and Gil-Galad
Long before the events of The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Sauron had already been beaten – though only temporarily. This earlier defeat left him weakened, which is the state he’s in at the start of The Fellowship of the Ring. This first victory against Sauron wasn’t simple; it involved huge battles, glimpses of which are shown at the beginning of the film.
As depicted in The Fellowship of the Ring, Isildur was the one who severed the ring from Sauron’s hand. This act temporarily weakened Sauron, stripping him of the ring’s power. However, it was actually Elendil and Gil-Galad who first disabled Sauron, creating the opportunity for Isildur to cut the ring from him.
While Elendil and Gil-Galad weren’t among the most effective fighters against Sauron – they both died in battle – it’s still remarkable how much damage they inflicted on such a powerful being in The Lord of the Rings.
Lúthien
Even though she doesn’t appear in the Lord of the Rings films, Lúthien is one of the most powerful characters in the entire story. At the peak of his strength, she could have seriously challenged Sauron. Lúthien was an immortal elf princess from Doriath, and she had amazing abilities, notably enchanting people with her singing.
Interestingly, Lúthien actually helped defeat Sauron multiple times throughout the history of Middle-earth, and she did so through the power of song. During one key battle, she fought alongside Huan, a powerful wolf-like creature.
Although they didn’t completely destroy Sauron – he would later return to threaten Middle-earth – they did force him to surrender. Lúthien used her enchanting singing to overwhelm him, and Huan, the great wolf, physically seized him. Realizing he was beaten, Sauron admitted defeat and escaped.
It’s important to remember that Lúthien and Huan battled Sauron in a much earlier form than most people are used to seeing in the films and the Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power series. They faced him before he fully became the powerful Dark Lord he is known as, not at the peak of his strength.
Back then, Sauron wasn’t as powerful as he would later become; he served another, greater being named Morgoth. While it’s important to remember this when considering Lúthien and Huan’s victory over him, the fact that they did defeat him—even in his weaker state—shows they had the potential to stop him from becoming a major threat.
Melkor/Morgath
As we’ve seen in Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings, Sauron was once a follower of a powerful being named Morgoth, who is also capable of defeating him. Morgoth, initially known as Melkor, was one of the Valar—essentially angelic, god-like beings in the Lord of the Rings universe—and their full story hasn’t been adapted for film yet.
Morgoth wasn’t a benevolent being; instead, he started creating discord through his songs and became a truly sinister figure, essentially acting as the devil in The Lord of the Rings. While Sauron is clearly the main villain in the original Lord of the Rings trilogy, many consider Morgoth to be the greatest villain in the entire story.
Considering how incredibly powerful Morgoth was – arguably the greatest evil ever to exist, and the one who taught Sauron everything – it’s highly likely he could defeat Sauron, even at Sauron’s strongest. Remember, it took all the Valar, along with elves and other allies, just to overcome Morgoth.
Gandalf The White
Most people who know the Lord of the Rings films will immediately recognize the name Gandalf. He’s been a major character not just in the original Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Hobbit trilogy, but also appeared in The Rings of Power, as seen at the end of its second season.
Gandalf will even be appearing in the upcoming Lord of the Rings film, The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. But his return isn’t just about fan favorites – Gandalf is a vital character throughout the entire series because he’s one of the most powerful beings in Middle-earth.
When Gandalf appears as Gandalf the White – the most powerful form a wizard can take – he would have been a formidable opponent to Sauron in a head-on fight. However, he already demonstrated enough power to defeat Sauron, even if he didn’t do it alone. The truth is, without Gandalf’s assistance throughout the story, Sauron would have likely won.
Tom Bombadil
Despite not appearing in the Lord of the Rings films, Tom Bombadil is arguably the most powerful character in the entire story, and likely could defeat Sauron. His true nature is never fully explained in the books, but it’s clear he isn’t a normal person or creature.
Despite his reclusive nature, Tom Bombadil was incredibly powerful, possibly even older than the most ancient beings in Middle-earth. Although he rarely intervened, he did help the hobbits several times, and likely could have easily overcome Sauron if he’d chosen to. This immense power might be the reason he isn’t featured prominently in the Lord of the Rings films.
