HBO is already planning what’s next after the new Harry Potter series, and recent comments from network executives suggest they’re eager to keep the story going after it premieres.
Casey Bloys on Harry Potter Season 2 status
Casey Bloys, head of HBO, has announced that writers are already working on the second season of the Harry Potter TV show, even though the first season is still being filmed.
In an interview with The Times of London, HBO’s Casey Bloys explained they want to keep the time between seasons as short as possible, especially since the young actors are growing up quickly. He clarified that while a new season is in development—season two is currently being written—it won’t necessarily be released every year due to the show’s large scope and complex production. Despite the challenges, HBO is working to avoid significant delays.
During a press conference in November 2025, the executive explained that there would still be some downtime between seasons of the show. While they’re aiming for a quick turnaround – not necessarily finishing one season on Friday and starting the next on Monday – they plan to minimize any significant delays (according to Deadline).
He explained that this method was designed to appeal to both the young actors and what viewers are hoping for.
Dominic McLaughlin plays Harry Potter in the series, with Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley and Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger. John Lithgow stars as Albus Dumbledore, alongside Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, and Nick Frost as Hagrid.
So, I’m hearing they’re filming the whole thing over at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in the UK, which is awesome. Francesca Gardiner is running the show as showrunner, and Mark Mylod—who I really liked his work on Succession—is directing a bunch of the episodes. Sounds like it’s in good hands!
HBO is creating a seven-season TV series based on J.K. Rowling’s books, with each season covering one novel. Filming for the first season started in 2025, and the team is currently working towards a planned 2027 release for Season 2.
