Casey Bloys, head of HBO, has addressed rumors about the network potentially being involved with Doctor Who, now that the BBC’s agreement with Disney+ has ended.
As a huge Doctor Who fan, I was so excited to hear that Disney+ and the BBC were teaming up! It started with the 60th anniversary specials in 2023, and now Disney+ is going to be the home for the next two seasons of the show, plus a brand new spin-off called ‘The War Between the Land and the Sea.’ It’s amazing news for fans like me!
In October 2025, it was revealed that the current agreement wouldn’t continue. However, Lindsay Salt, the BBC’s head of drama, confirmed the BBC is still dedicated to Doctor Who and plans to air a Christmas special in 2026, led by showrunner Russell T Davies.
Recently, Deadline asked Ncuti Gatwa (who plays Doctor Who) if HBO Max could become a streaming home for the show, similar to how HBO and the BBC are already working together on new series like ‘Half Man’ (created by Richard Gadd of ‘Baby Reindeer’) and ‘First Day on Earth’ starring Michaela Coel.
Salt did not rule out the possibility, noting that HBO “have been great partners creatively”.

During an interview with TopMob, Casey Bloys, the head of HBO and Max Content, indicated he would be open to collaborating on a future Doctor Who project.
He explained that it hadn’t been brought to their attention. While he wouldn’t rule it out completely, saying ‘you never know,’ he confirmed he currently had no knowledge of it.
Wow, the last season of Doctor Who really threw me for a loop! Ncuti Gatwa’s run as the Doctor ended in such a dramatic way. It looked like he was regenerating, but then… it was Billie Piper! I honestly didn’t see that coming, and I’m still reeling from the surprise of seeing her back.
Her quick appearance surprised everyone and immediately sparked a lot of discussion among fans about what might happen next in the world of Doctor Who.
Last December, writer and producer Davies said he’d given the BBC a preview of the Christmas special’s plot. He claimed they were incredibly impressed, saying they were ‘blown away’ by what’s coming.
HBO Max launches in the UK and Ireland on 26 March. Visit hbomax.com for more information.
