Andy Weir, the author of popular books like The Martian and Project Hail Mary, has shared that his pitch for a Star Trek TV show was turned down by Paramount.
On the Critical Drinker podcast, Weir explained that growing up as part of Generation X meant his science fiction experience was mainly watching old episodes of shows like the original Star Trek and Lost in Space.
There hadn’t been a lot of exciting science fiction on television – stories about people exploring space and having adventures – until Star Trek: The Next Generation came along.
Podcast host Will Jordan proposed that all of Star Trek produced after the series Enterprise (2001-2005) shouldn’t be considered official canon, but actor Jonathan Weir thought that was a bit extreme.
He shared his personal opinion as a viewer, saying he enjoys Strange New Worlds and thought Enterprise was a bit odd. He found Lower Decks fun to watch, and wasn’t interested in the other Star Trek series.

Weir explained that he proposed a new Star Trek series to Paramount. He had a lengthy Zoom meeting with the showrunners of the existing series and spoke at length with executive producer Alex Kurtzman.
Look, I’ll be honest, a lot of the newer Star Trek just hasn’t clicked with me. And personally, the guy behind it seems like a genuinely good person – I really do feel for him. But that doesn’t change the fact that, in my opinion, those shows are just… not good. He’s a lovely person, truly, but the work itself hasn’t resonated with me.
Weir jokingly added: “But they didn’t accept my pitch so, you know, f**k ‘em!”
As a huge Star Trek fan, it’s a little disappointing to hear there aren’t any new shows currently being worked on as the franchise nears its 60th anniversary. But the good news is we still have a lot to look forward to! Season 2 of Starfleet Academy and seasons 4 and 5 of Strange New Worlds are still on the way, and I’m really excited about those.
Alex Kurtzman recently discussed future Star Trek shows with TopMob, explaining that while the franchise has a long history, he wants to make sure it remains accessible and appealing to new audiences. He believes that keeping Star Trek fresh is essential for its continued success and longevity.
