Prime’s Tomb Raider Reboot Paused as Sophie Turner Suffers Injury

The upcoming Tomb Raider series on Prime Video is highly anticipated, especially since it’s being created by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, the creator of Fleabag. This marks the first time the popular video game franchise will be adapted into a live-action TV show, following two previous movies, and the team working on it suggests a large-scale production. When Sophie Turner, known for Game of Thrones, was cast as Lara Croft in September 2025, fans were thrilled and felt she was a perfect choice for the adventurous character. Filming began in January 2026 at Shepperton Studios in the UK, and a first image released by Amazon MGM Studios – showing Turner in Lara Croft’s signature look – reassured fans. Unfortunately, production has been temporarily halted due to an injury suffered by Turner.

Amazon MGM Studios has confirmed that Sophie Turner recently suffered a minor injury. Filming has been temporarily paused to allow her to recover. Sources say she’s expected to be back on set within two weeks, and the crew will continue to be paid during the break. Turner previously mentioned on the Julia Cunningham Show podcast that she has an ongoing back issue, discovered while preparing for her role as Lara Croft. It’s currently unknown whether her current injury is related to this pre-existing condition or occurred on set.

Will the Tomb Raider Series Be Delayed?

The recent, brief halt in production doesn’t seem to threaten the overall plan for releasing the Tomb Raider movie. Pauses of this length are common during filmmaking, and the studio has presented this as a standard precaution, which should reassure fans. The fact that the crew is still being paid during the break suggests Amazon MGM views this as a temporary pause, not a complete shutdown, and work is continuing even while a key crew member is absent. Short breaks due to cast injuries are also typical on action movies, especially ones with the kinds of stunts and physical challenges central to the Tomb Raider world.

Amazon MGM is making the right call by not rushing Alicia Turner back to work, even if it means extra costs to keep the cast and crew waiting. The entire Tomb Raider series depends on her performance, and the demanding physical role requires her to be fully recovered. Protecting the series in the long run is more important than sticking to a tight schedule, and no deadline is worth risking her health.

Alicia Vikander wasn’t the only Lara Croft – she’s the third actress to play the character in movies, after Angelina Jolie and before Alicia Vikander herself. The show also boasts a fantastic supporting cast, featuring well-known names like Jason Isaacs, Sigourney Weaver, and many others. The first two episodes are directed by Jonathan Van Tulleken, who recently worked on the hit show Shōgun, and he’s also an executive producer. Considering the high level of talent both in front of and behind the camera, a short break in filming shouldn’t delay the series’ release.
