Thirteen years ago, a groundbreaking sci-fi series premiered, offering its lead actor a truly challenging role – and a performance many consider to be among the best on TV. While several excellent sci-fi shows have graced our screens in recent decades, Orphan Black often gets overlooked. One reason shows struggle to gain widespread popularity is a lack of exposure on major networks. When Orphan Black first aired in the US, it appeared on BBC America.
The first season of Orphan Black debuted on March 30, 2013. The show featured an incredible performance by Tatiana Maslany, who played the main character and a multitude of other roles, each with a unique personality.
Orphan Black Debuted 13 Years Ago
The series Orphan Black began with the episode “Natural Selection” on March 30, 2013. The episode immediately introduced the show’s central mystery: Sarah Manning, a hustler in Toronto played by Tatiana Maslany, witnesses a woman who is her exact look-alike commit suicide by jumping in front of a train. Seeing that the woman had money, Sarah decides to assume her identity and take what she has.
At first, Sarah really came across as the bad guy, right from the start. But the show quickly gave me a reason to feel for her – she has a daughter, Kira, who’s in foster care, and she desperately needs money to get her back. Sadly, that plan falls apart when it’s revealed the woman she’s dealing with is actually an undercover cop named Beth. When Beth’s former partner shows up, Sarah has to make a run for it. And just when she thinks things can’t get worse, she witnesses another woman, who looks exactly like her – Katja – get shot by a sniper. That’s when things really kick into high gear and she’s forced to go on the run.
The sci-fi series Orphan Black centers around clones and the central mystery of their origins and a series of murders targeting them. Over five seasons and 50 episodes, Sarah, the main character, uncovers the truth behind the clones’ creation, the reasons behind the attacks, and the people responsible. While the show’s complex backstory was a major draw, Tatiana Maslany’s phenomenal portrayal of multiple clones was truly exceptional. Orphan Black is notable for having a satisfying conclusion, something many sci-fi shows fail to achieve, making all five seasons a worthwhile experience. From beginning to end, it remained a smart, well-acted, and consistently engaging television show.
Tatiana Maslany Proved She Was a Star in Orphan Black
Tatiana Maslany first showed just how talented she is in the sci-fi series Orphan Black, even before she became She-Hulk in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Many viewers consider her work on Orphan Black to be far more impactful than her MCU role, and it stands out as one of the best performances in a sci-fi series in recent years. She was particularly captivating as she transformed between characters like the con artist Sarah Manning and the police officer Beth Childs, completely immersing herself in each new identity.
This created a host of different clones, and Tatiana Maslany brilliantly played each one. She portrayed characters ranging from a free-spirited scientist named Cosima to an alcoholic housewife, Alison, and even a dangerous serial killer, Helena. She also played Rachel, a ruthless corporate executive, and Tony, a transgender man. What made it truly remarkable was that each clone was a distinct individual with a unique personality and quirks, and Maslany brought them all to life flawlessly.
It wasn’t shocking to see Tatiana Maslany recognized during awards season, especially given her success in Canada, where she earned numerous Canadian Screen Awards. However, her achievements weren’t fully acknowledged in the United States. Despite her incredible performance in Orphan Black, she only received three Emmy nominations, winning once in 2016 for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series, and a single Golden Globe nomination in 2014, which she didn’t win. Overall, Maslany garnered 39 award nominations worldwide, winning 23, and her work on Orphan Black remains one of the strongest sci-fi series to emerge in the 21st century.
