A significant change to the storyline of The Big Bang Theory nearly twenty years ago actually prevented a potentially show-ending scandal. In 2007, CBS began airing the series created by Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady, which went on to become one of the most popular comedies ever. Like many sitcoms, The Big Bang Theory centered around a group of friends, but it stood out by focusing on characters who were highly intelligent but struggled with social interactions: Sheldon, Leonard, Raj, and Howard.
The story of The Big Bang Theory began with Penny, who helped the audience connect with the show. She quickly became a possible romantic partner, and it was obvious from the start that she and Leonard had a connection. Sheldon wasn’t interested, but the show later changed his personality slightly, and he might have been attracted to Penny otherwise.
The Big Bang Theory’s Original Version Of Sheldon Was Sexual

Everyone knows the original pilot for The Big Bang Theory needed a lot of changes before CBS approved it. One major issue was the character of Sheldon, who was initially portrayed as overly sexual and made inappropriate advances. The unaired pilot showed him openly discussing his attraction to women, but his approach was considered offensive and disrespectful, leading to significant revisions.
Fortunately, The Big Bang Theory made a smart choice by portraying Sheldon as someone who wasn’t particularly interested in relationships at first. This direction lasted throughout most of the show, and it’s why seeing him gradually fall in love with Amy felt so rewarding. If the writers hadn’t gone this route, their romance might not have been as believable or impactful. Ultimately, this choice also helped make Sheldon a more distinctive and memorable character.
Original Sheldon Could Have Made The Big Bang Theory’s Problematic Brand Of Comedy Worse

Rewriting parts of Sheldon’s story not only improved the show, but likely prevented its early cancellation. Although The Big Bang Theory remains popular, its humor, particularly in the beginning, was often problematic. Many jokes relied on racist, sexist, and generally offensive stereotypes. The show also didn’t treat its female characters, like Penny, very well, something even the show’s creators now acknowledge and regret.
Turning Sheldon into a dishonest or manipulative character would have created even more problems for the show. Viewers often excused his flaws because he was portrayed as unaware of how his actions affected others. But adding dishonesty to his personality would have made the show’s already questionable humor even worse, potentially driving viewers away. For much of The Big Bang Theory, Sheldon didn’t have many positive traits, which is what made him a compelling character. However, if he had been fundamentally unlikeable, it might have made him impossible to watch.
The Big Bang Theory is available to stream on HBO Max.
