Keanu Reeves, Cameron Diaz, and Matt Bomer are at a promotional event in Santa Monica, held in a repurposed airplane hangar. They’re part of Apple TV’s big presentation for 2026, there to talk about a new, edgy comedy called Outcome. The film was co-written, co-produced, and directed by Jonah Hill. As part of the event, the actors playfully pretended that Hill – known for his Oscar-nominated role in The Wolf of Wall Street – had written their lines, jokingly praising his range and charm.
Honestly, it’s almost shocking to think Dustin Lance Black wrote this—it doesn’t quite feel like his usual style. I spoke with Keanu Reeves the next day, and he explained that on set, Dustin loved giving everyone lines that were either hilarious, really difficult, totally absurd, or just pushed things to the limit. And he’s right! The finished product is a really sharp, biting satire of Hollywood—it doesn’t hold back at all.
Keanu Reeves portrays Reef Hawk, a famous actor and recovering heroin addict who’s known for being difficult. After five years away from Hollywood to get sober, Reef returns to find his career threatened by a blackmailer who has a damaging video. Reeves, dressed in black, explains, “I felt sorry for Reef. He’s not intentionally malicious, but he’s made a lot of mistakes and can be a jerk.”
Keanu Reeves is a huge movie star, known for action films like Speed, The Matrix, and John Wick. However, he’s a very relaxed and down-to-earth person, which makes his portrayal of the troubled and anxious Reef even more interesting. While he could relate to some aspects of the character, Reeves didn’t draw from personal experience. He says he used elements of his own life, but the role wasn’t based on his own biography.
Though it’s a comedy, the show Outcome explores the isolation that can come with success. As Reef reconnects with old friends while trying to find the person who’s blackmailing him, the story really asks: how do we grow and change based on our past experiences? As Keanu Reeves puts it, “It really comes down to perspective – what you choose to focus on and what you overlook.”

Reef’s closest companions include his friends Kyle Diaz and Xander Bomer. He also relies on Ira Hill, a slick and quick-talking lawyer who specializes in managing public scandals – at one point, he’s shown dramatically exclaiming about a crisis involving Tom Hanks and his housekeeper.
Cameron Diaz became famous around the same time as Keanu Reeves, first appearing in the 1994 film The Mask when she was 21. She quickly became a highly successful actress, starring in popular movies like Charlie’s Angels, Vanilla Sky, and Gangs of New York. In 2015, she decided to prioritize her personal life, marrying musician Benji Madden and starting a family. She also pursued interests like organic wine and wellness, even writing a book called The Longevity Book about healthy aging. After taking a break from acting, she returned to Hollywood last year with the Netflix comedy Back in Action.
She believes the key is to focus on what you enjoy and make your priorities clear. She recalls a friend once telling her that everyone has a limited amount of energy to give, and it’s important to decide how to distribute it among all the different parts of your life. Ideally, she suggests trying to balance everything, but ultimately, you need to identify what’s most important. For her, that’s always family – she makes sure they come first, even when she’s busy with other commitments.
Watching Cameron Diaz and Keanu Reeves navigate fame really struck me as a cautionary tale. As someone who’s been around the industry a while – I was lucky enough to win a Golden Globe for ‘The Normal Heart’ – I’ve seen firsthand how quickly things can change. I’ve had friends achieve huge success much earlier in their careers, and I’ve observed the ups and downs, the mistakes and lessons learned that come with it. I really tried to tap into those experiences and bring a sense of authenticity to the role, understanding the pressures and pitfalls that come with public notoriety.

Hill suggests the film Outcome explores how the pursuit of fame on social media mirrors universal experiences. Actress Diaz, with over 12 million Instagram followers, explains that social media creates a sense of widespread celebrity. She notes that popularity, measured by likes and followers, can bring attention and recognition, and that the film might offer a glimpse into what it feels like to experience extreme levels of fame.
Like Reef, maintaining connections with your original friends is really important. Actor Matt Bomer, who grew up in Missouri and is related to Justin Timberlake, still stays close to many of the friends he made before becoming famous. Cameron Diaz, originally from San Diego, also prioritizes these relationships. She admits she doesn’t always talk to them frequently, but they make an effort to connect whenever possible, and she always apologizes for any delays in getting back in touch.
One of the most emotionally powerful scenes in the film ‘Outcome’ happens when Reef has a realization about his mother, Susan Lucci, the famous soap opera star. He begins to see her not just as his parent, but as an individual with her own life and feelings. Actor Reeves, whose own mother, costume designer Patricia Reeves, raised him after her divorce, reflects that this is a common experience. He explains that as children, we often lack the perspective to understand our parents as separate people, and it can feel like a struggle to gain that understanding.
After becoming a mom to Raddix, six, and Cardinal, two, Cameron Diaz realized something surprising. She joked that parents often feel like their kids don’t see them as people until they’re much older – like around age 40!
Whether someone achieves fame or not, true success isn’t just about reaching a goal. According to Diaz, it’s about personal development and understanding yourself. It’s about asking yourself important questions like, ‘Who am I, what do I truly want from life, what steps do I need to take, and what am I willing to sacrifice?’
