The BBC is investing in the North East through its North East Digital Accelerator program, with new projects and chances for development announced recently.
A new crime drama called The Northumbria Mysteries, featuring Robson Green, is coming soon. The series is set in the beautiful landscapes of the Northumberland coast and its nearby towns, and follows an unexpected pair of detectives. Robson Green plays Joe Ruby, a resourceful man haunted by past errors and what-ifs.
He’ll be working with DI Rose O’Connell, who’s been described as his complete opposite – she’s a highly intelligent, Oxford-educated detective known for being calm and thoughtful. The actress who will play Rose hasn’t been revealed yet.
I’m really excited to hear they’re starting production on this eight-part series this spring! It’s being made by Lonesome Pine Productions, a company I know is based in Byker, Newcastle – it’s great to see more filmmaking happening up north.
Lesley Douglas, from Lonesome Pine Productions, announced her excitement about Robson Green starring as Joe Ruby in their new project, set against the beautiful scenery of Northumberland. She described the collaboration with the BBC to bring these characters to the screen as a truly rewarding experience.

The North East Digital Accelerator has announced that the new TV series based on ‘The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole Aged 13¾’ will be filmed in Hartlepool at The Northern Studios, and also at various locations around Hartlepool and Sunderland.
The BBC has revealed that two production companies from the North East of England will each create three films for The One Show. Additionally, four independent production companies have been chosen to participate in the Digital Accelerator program.

As a total movie buff, I’m really excited to hear about the support being given to some fantastic North East filmmakers! Four companies – Adventure Alliance Films up in County Durham, Film Nova from Gateshead, Newcastle’s Northern Child, and Wander Films in Middlesbrough – are getting some serious help from the BBC and North East Screen. It’s not just funding either; they’ll be getting mentoring, advice on the creative side of things, and business guidance to help them grow. It’s awesome to see investment in local talent!
The announcement of ‘The Northumbria Mysteries’ arrives as Robson Green’s popular detective series, ‘Grantchester,’ prepares to conclude after eleven seasons.
The Northumbria Mysteries will air on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
