Starfield PS5 Won’t Play Off Physical Disc without a Download

It appears Bethesda’s new game, Starfield, requires a download even with a physical copy.

This release is a bit different from other game key discs, like the one for Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. A copy shared online by the X (formerly Twitter) account Does It Play shows the Blu-ray contains about 81GB of data.

As we mentioned before, the complete game requires 123GB of space, meaning there’s still more to download.

Similar to Crimson Desert, the game will ask you to connect to the internet when you first start it, so it can download and install updates. After the updates are finished, you can choose to play without an internet connection.

We could release the game on two discs, but it seems the publisher prefers to save money and have players download the remaining content instead.

Although having a physical copy seems good in theory, many people buy games to keep them long-term. However, as the website Does It Play notes, the Starfield disc would become useless if Sony ever stopped running its servers.
