Author Andy Weir, known for writing The Martian, is facing backlash after publicly criticizing the newer Star Trek series and Paramount+’s handling of the franchise.
According to Weir, he once wrote a script for Star Trek that was rejected by executive producer Alex Kurtzman. He was upset by this decision and didn’t hesitate to express his disappointment.
I actually pitched a Star Trek show to Paramount,” Weir shared on the Critical Drinkers podcast. “I spent a lot of time on Zoom with the showrunners, talking with [Kurtzman]. He’s a genuinely nice person, but honestly, those shows just aren’t very good.
“He is a nice guy, but they didn’t accept my pitch so, you know, f-ck ’em.”
Don Winslow Demands Andy Weir Apologize
Honestly, what he said really blew up online, especially within the Star Trek and sci-fi fandom. It got so intense that Don Winslow, the author of Crime 101, actually went on social media to call out the whole thing – and he didn’t hold back at all when it came to criticizing the person responsible.
Don Winslow congratulated Andy Weir on the success of Project Hail Mary and The Martian, saying he’s a big fan. However, Winslow also criticized Weir for publicly dismissing the work of other writers, specifically Alex Kurtzman. Winslow stated Kurtzman is a talented writer, creator, and producer, and that Weir owes him an apology as a fellow writer.
Winslow wasn’t done there, either.
Following some debate among science fiction fans about his request for an apology from Weir, Winslow explained his position further: “Writers support each other, and that’s why the Writers Guild exists. It’s not okay to criticize another writer just because they didn’t choose your idea.”
Many Star Trek Fans Are Siding With Andy Weir
It’s clear many people agree with Weir’s viewpoint. A quick look at the Star Trek discussion on Reddit shows a lot of criticism aimed at Paramount+: one user humorously pointed out how determined the company seems to be to prevent fans of Star Trek from actually making Star Trek content.
Andy Weir, the popular science fiction author behind Project Hail Mary, has a new movie that’s quickly becoming a huge success, breaking box office records since its March release. However, Weir feels that current Star Trek shows and movies don’t connect with the original series or films, and he believes that’s a problem.
Some people strongly support Weir, but Winslow definitely does not, and he made it very clear how much he disapproved of what Weir had done.
