I’ve always loved sitcoms – they’ve been around practically forever! It’s amazing to think they actually started way back in 1926, originally on the radio. They quickly made the jump to TV, with the first one in the UK being Pinwrights Progress in 1946, and Mary Kay and Johnny hitting American screens just a year later. And honestly, people haven’t stopped watching since – it’s a genre that’s really stood the test of time.
Sitcoms have evolved to cover a wider range of topics and feature more diverse characters, but at their heart, they’re still comedies about everyday situations – that’s what defines the genre, and why people love them. If you’re looking for a good laugh, here are 7 sitcoms currently available to stream for free on Tubi.
7) Married…with Children

Married with Children, featuring Ed O’Neill, Katey Sagal, Christina Applegate, and David Faustino, stood out from other sitcoms of its era by presenting a deliberately unidealized family. The show centered on the often-frustrated life of Al Bundy, a somewhat unpleasant shoe salesman, his wife Peggy, and their two lazy children. While sometimes criticized for being harsh, Married…with Children is remembered for being groundbreaking television – it openly embraced its ‘lowbrow’ humor and didn’t shy away from portraying a deeply flawed family who frequently bickered and showed their imperfections. The show was honest about its nature: it wasn’t about perfect people, but about realistically flawed individuals and their messy relationships.
6) Everybody Hates Chris

Unlike many shows on this list, Everybody Hates Chris was a recent sitcom that received widespread praise from both critics (92%) and viewers (94%). It’s often credited with helping to revitalize the sitcom genre in the mid-2000s when it was starting to decline. Created by Chris Rock and debuting in 2005, the show was loosely based on his own childhood growing up in Brooklyn during the 1980s. It honestly portrayed the experiences of a young Black man during that era, and its relatable, humorous approach resonated with a broad audience, contributing to its significant success and popularity.
5) I Dream of Jeannie

I Dream of Jeannie is a classic sitcom that’s remembered as one of the best. It’s delightfully over-the-top, visually vibrant, and simply entertaining. The show follows Jeannie (Barbara Eden), a genie who is freed from a bottle by astronaut Captain Tony Nelson (Larry Hagman). Although she initially becomes his servant as part of their arrangement, she eventually falls in love with him. Unlike traditional genie tales, Jeannie doesn’t limit herself to three wishes, and often uses her magic freely, sometimes without even telling Tony. This naturally leads to a lot of funny and chaotic situations. While it wasn’t a massive ratings success, I Dream of Jeannie remains beloved for its pure silliness.
4) All in the Family

Considered one of the best sitcoms ever made, All in the Family starred Rob Reiner, Jean Stapleton, Sally Struthers, and Carroll O’Connor. The show, originally inspired by the British series Till Death Do Us Part, focused on Archie Bunker (O’Connor) and his family as they navigated a changing world, often clashing over important issues. Unlike many sitcoms of the era, All in the Family didn’t shy away from tough topics. It boldly addressed real-life issues like racism, sexism, class differences, homophobia, and the challenges families faced in 1970s America, including loss, grief, and mental health.
3) The Jeffersons

I absolutely loved The Jeffersons! It’s amazing how forward-thinking the show was, especially as a spin-off of All in the Family. The story of George and Louise Jefferson, and their son Lionel, moving into a fancy apartment on the Upper East Side was just captivating. Watching them adjust to a new life, dealing with both the perks and the awkwardness of their new surroundings, was so entertaining. And the dynamic with their neighbors, the Willses, especially with their daughter and Lionel, added so much tension and humor! The cast was just perfect – Florence is seriously one of the funniest characters ever created! What I really appreciated was how the show tackled important issues with such wit and grace, never shying away from difficult topics. It wasn’t afraid to confront those issues head-on, but always managed to keep that essential sitcom humor. It’s a truly enduring show, and I still enjoy it today.
2) Diff’rent Strokes

Diff’rent Strokes is a truly iconic and much-loved sitcom. The show centers around Arnold and Willis Jackson, two brothers from Harlem, who are adopted by the wealthy Philip Drummond after the death of their mother, who worked as his housekeeper. It made Gary Coleman a household name and gave us the unforgettable catchphrase, “Whatchu talkin’ bout, Willis?” While a funny show about family, Diff’rent Strokes also tackled important issues of race and class, bringing these conversations into homes across America during the 1970s and 80s.
1) The Conners

I have to say, The Conners really stuck with me. As a spin-off of the hugely popular Roseanne from the late 80s, it felt like revisiting old friends, but dealing with something incredibly real – the aftermath of Roseanne’s death. What I loved most is how honestly it portrays everyday struggles – raising kids, dealing with loss, the challenges of dating, and just trying to make ends meet as a working-class family. It’s a show that really gets life, and reminds you why sitcoms can be so comforting and enduring. Plus, anything featuring John Goodman is guaranteed to be fantastic – he’s just brilliant!
