Super Meat Boy 3D is launching tomorrow on PS5, and it’s been a quick process from its initial announcement to release! Reviews are now available for the game on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2.
It’s unusual that there aren’t any reviews for the PS5 version, and that’s likely why we haven’t been able to test it yet. However, we’ve included some opinions from other sources below. The PC version currently has a Metacritic score of 80.
Noisy Pixel – 9/10
Super Meat Boy 3D brings the series’ famously challenging platforming to a 3D world, with smooth controls and cleverly designed levels. The game offers a lot of replayability thanks to its unique Light and Dark World system. Though it doesn’t quite reach the extreme difficulty of the first game, it’s an enjoyable step forward with satisfying movement and still feels true to the original Super Meat Boy experience.
DualShockers – 8/10
Super Meat Boy 3D doesn’t revolutionize the series with its move to 3D, and it doesn’t need to. It delivers the challenging, smooth, and accurate platforming that fans love. Expect to fail a lot – that’s part of the fun! While a few levels feel unfair and some bosses aren’t as memorable, and the 3D perspective can be tricky at times, overall the game is incredibly enjoyable. I can’t wait to replay each level and beat my best times by just a fraction of a second.
TheGamer – 8/10
Despite the intense difficulty of Super Meat Boy 3D – even when frustrating deaths made me want to give up – I still found myself enjoying the challenge. It’s a game that won’t be for everyone, but even with a few minor issues, this sequel lives up to the quality of the original, fantastic game.
Shacknews – 7/10
Even though Super Meat Boy 3D has its problems, it still manages to capture the addictive challenge of the original. The feeling of finally beating a difficult level is incredibly rewarding – watching all your previous failed attempts before succeeding is as satisfying as ever. Dedicated players will definitely overcome this game, and I expect speedrunners will find amazing ways to master its levels. However, this game demands a lot more patience than previous installments, given the chaotic nature of a fast-paced 3D platformer.
CGMagazine – 7/10
While Super Meat Boy 3D has some enjoyable parts, clunky controls ultimately make it more frustrating than fun.
Gamereactor UK – 6/10
In short, Super Meat Boy 3D doesn’t build on what made the original great; it tries something new that doesn’t quite fit. While it still feels like Super Meat Boy in terms of its look and atmosphere, the gameplay is a little off and doesn’t feel as polished. It’s good to have Super Meat Boy back, but this installment doesn’t showcase the character at its best.
