A new survival game with over 200 hours of gameplay is now available for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and Premium members on PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X. While it’s unclear how long the game will stay on the service – most games are available for 12 to 24 months – players will definitely have their hands full exploring everything it offers.
Hinterland Studio, a Canadian developer, released the survival game The Long Dark in 2017, before the genre became overcrowded. While games like Rust and DayZ had already started to gain popularity, The Long Dark offered a fresh experience at the time. It received a respectable 76 on Metacritic, but player reviews suggest it’s even better than that score indicates – it boasts an 88% approval rating on Steam with over 39,000 reviews. This strong reception translated to impressive sales, exceeding 5 million copies by 2021, meaning many players have likely already experienced it. However, the game has changed significantly since its initial release and is quite different today.
Exploration Survival Game
Whether you prefer a guided story or a freeform challenge, The Long Dark offers both. The story mode currently has five episodes available, with a sixth on the way this year. Plus, a sequel called Blackfrost: The Long Dark 2 is also planned for early access release this year. Regardless of how you play, the core goal remains the same: to survive in a vast, frozen world after a major geomagnetic disaster.
Like many survival games, The Long Dark offers a lot of playtime. You can finish the main story in just over 20 hours, but exploring optional content will easily extend that to around 60 hours. If you aim to complete absolutely everything, expect to spend over 250 hours with the game.
With The Long Dark now on Xbox Game Pass, subscribers don’t have to pay the usual $35 to play. Plus, they can buy the game permanently with a 20% discount as long as it’s offered through the Game Pass service.
