Warning! Spoilers for Outlander season 8, episode 4 ahead!
The show Outlander recently brought back a familiar face: Le Comte St. Germain. This villain appeared in season 2, but hasn’t been seen since Jamie and Claire returned to Scotland after their difficult time in France. Now, in Outlander‘s final season, he’s resurfaced and seems to be connected to Fergus Fraser.
In season 2 of Outlander, Jamie and Claire took in Fergus as their son after finding him living in a difficult situation. He’s remained a part of the Fraser family ever since, and by season 8, he’s living in Savannah, Georgia, with his wife, Marsali, and their children. After being absent for a couple of seasons, Fergus and Marsali returned in season 8, much to the delight of fans. This isn’t just a brief appearance, though – Fergus now has his own storyline exploring secrets from his past and family.
The storyline for Fergus in Outlander Season 8 is directly based on Diana Gabaldon’s novels. However, because he hasn’t appeared on the show for a while, revisiting his story feels a little sudden. The final season of this romantic fantasy series doesn’t have much time to reintroduce characters who haven’t been seen in a long time, so we’re here to help fill you in.
Claire Made An Enemy Of The Comte St. Germain In Outlander Season 2
In season 2 of Outlander, Claire once again relied on her medical skills, which caused quite a bit of trouble. Soon after arriving in France with Jamie, she correctly identified a sailor as having smallpox. To prevent the disease from spreading, the ship he arrived on – and everything on board – had to be burned. This resulted in a significant financial loss for the ship’s owner, Le Comte St. Germain, and was all due to Claire’s diagnosis.
In season 2 of Outlander, the Comte was determined to get revenge on Claire, and he tried his best to do so. He secretly slipped a substance called cascara into her wine at a party, making her very sick. Thankfully, Claire recovered. She later discovered that the Comte had gotten the cascara from Master Raymond, a character who is becoming increasingly important as the show progresses.
Master Raymond didn’t know the Comte planned to poison Claire. Feeling guilty, he gave her a necklace with a stone that would darken if poison was nearby. This necklace protected Claire from the Comte throughout the rest of season 2 of Outlander. Later, Claire got a chance to get even with the Comte when King Louis XV, believing her to be the mysterious La Dame Blanche, asked her to determine if the Comte and Master Raymond practiced sorcery.
King Louis tested people with poison to find witches, but Master Raymond cleverly outsmarted him. He told the King that only the innocent could survive the poison, then secretly switched the drinks so he and Claire received a harmless substitute while Comte St. Germain got the real poison. We last saw the Comte collapsing and being taken away by the King, and we assumed he had died. However, both the Outlander books and the show have since revealed that wasn’t the case.
The Outlander Books Reveal That The Comte St. Germain Is A Time Traveler
The Outlander books share a lot more about the Comte St. Germain than season 8 hinted at. Diana Gabaldon’s novella, The Space Between, goes back to France and shows what happened to the Comte years after Jamie and Claire left. We learn he had a secret meeting with Master Raymond, and it turns out both men, like Claire, can travel through time.
The origins of St. Germain are mysterious. While season 2 of Outlander takes place in the 1740s, clues suggest he was in France as early as the 1630s. The events in The Space Between occur in 1778, just one year before Fergus learns the truth about the Comte in season 8 of Outlander.
This short story also shows that Comte St. Germain has done a lot of experiments with time travel, trying to move around within his own lifetime or even jump further ahead. Because of this, it’s nearly impossible to know where he is or if he’s actually alive or dead at any given time.
Outlander Season 8 Reveals That The Comte St. Germain Is Fergus’ Biological Father
Season 8 of Outlander takes a dark turn in episode 4. Percy Beauchamp reveals to Fergus that the Comte St. Germain had a shocking secret: he secretly married Amelie Beauchamp, his wife’s sister. Later, when he lost interest in her, he callously sold her into prostitution. It’s unknown if he knew at the time that his wife was expecting a child.
Fergus was born in a brothel and didn’t realize Amelie was his mother. In season 8 of Outlander, he recalls Amelie disliking all the children there, particularly him. Despite this, she requested to see him before she died, telling him to “be a good boy.” These memories lead Fergus to believe Percy’s story about his parentage, but it also makes him question why Percy revealed this information.
Comte St. Germain was a prosperous businessman, and in season 8 of Outlander, Percy reveals that before he vanished, St. Germain bought a controlling share in a company investing in land in America. As a result, his estate now owns a large amount of property in the Old Northwest. Percy hopes Fergus will claim to be St. Germain’s heir and sell the land to him for a substantial profit.
What Outlander’s Big Fergus Reveal Could Mean For The Rest Of Season 8
In season 8 of Outlander, Fergus was shocked to learn the truth about his birth parents. Having grown up believing he was an orphan, raised in a brothel, he discovered he might actually be the legitimate son of a rich merchant and a woman he thought disliked him. If Fergus revealed this information, shared by Percy, his life and his family’s would be dramatically different. They could become very wealthy and have opportunities they never dreamed of.
However, there are some potential problems. Even if Percy’s marriage license is real, Fergus would still be taking a chance. It’s impossible to know what Percy and his allies might do with the land, or how it could impact the war. Plus, the Comte St. Germain was an enemy of Jamie and Claire, who Fergus cares about a great deal. This situation could create a lot of trouble he’s better off avoiding.
The fact that Fergus’s father was a time traveler is important to understanding Fergus himself. The show has already shown that time travel is inherited, meaning Fergus probably has the ability to travel through the stones, like Claire, Brianna, and Master Raymond. It’s currently unknown if this will be a plot point in the upcoming eighth season of Outlander, but we’ll find out eventually.
