The first trailer for HBO’s new Harry Potter series has generated a lot of excitement, but also some fan concerns about how the story will be adapted. Some of these concerns are reasonable, particularly those questioning whether HBO will stay true to J.K. Rowling’s books. However, other criticisms don’t seem to hold much weight, especially considering the success of the existing Harry Potter films, which demonstrate a faithful adaptation is possible.
The first eight Harry Potter films were released over ten years, from 2001 to 2011, and the series became even more popular during that time. Even with recent discussions about the author, Harry Potter continues to attract new fans. The upcoming HBO series is expected to bring in a fresh generation of viewers who are new to the Wizarding World. While these new fans might not analyze every detail of the trailers, longtime fans certainly are—sometimes even focusing on minor issues!
Why ‘Harry Potter’ Fans Don’t Like the Overall Look of HBO’s New Trailer
Okay, so I just watched the trailer for the new Harry Potter series, which is basically a fresh take on The Philosopher’s Stone. It’s our first real look at the new cast, and while there’s a lot to get excited about, a surprising number of fans are actually talking about… the color. The original 2001 movie was super colorful, almost bursting with vibrancy. But this trailer? It feels… washed out. Even Hogwarts, which should be this warm, inviting place, especially compared to Harry’s awful life with the Dursleys, doesn’t really feel that way in the trailer. It’s just… dull, honestly.
Fans are getting creative online, even editing scenes themselves to suggest improvements. While there are reasons behind the show’s visual style, it ultimately comes down to artistic choices. It’s important to realize the Harry Potter show isn’t simply trying to recreate the movies in more detail. If that were the goal, there wouldn’t be much point! Changes in things like color schemes can be just as impactful as recasting the actors. Many complaints seem to boil down to a preference for the familiar look of the original films.
The ‘Harry Potter’ Movies Should Calm Fans’ Nerves About the HBO Series’ Muted Colors

Chris Columbus directed the first two Harry Potter films, The Philosopher’s Stone (2001) and The Chamber of Secrets (2002), which were known for their bright, colorful scenes – something fans have been hoping to see in the new HBO trailer. While it initially seemed like the series would maintain that vibrant look, the third film, The Prisoner of Azkaban (2004), took a much darker, more muted approach. In fact, Azkaban removed color from many scenes even more noticeably than the HBO trailer suggests. Despite the change in style, The Prisoner of Azkaban remains a favorite among many Harry Potter fans, proving that visual vibrancy isn’t the only thing that makes a great movie.
As a huge Harry Potter fan, I’ve always noticed how the films got progressively… darker, visually. It wasn’t just Azkaban – each movie seemed to lose more and more color, leaning heavily into blues, grays, and blacks. Interestingly, most fans actually loved this shift at the time! It was seen as a clever way to mirror the books getting more mature as we, the audience, grew up alongside the characters. And honestly, it did work to emphasize the increasingly serious storylines. But if I’m being honest, rewatching the series now can be a bit of a shock – especially going from the brighter Chamber of Secrets straight into the moodiness of Prisoner of Azkaban.
Considering everything, the subtle colors used in the HBO trailer strike a nice balance between the look of the first Harry Potter film and the style of the directors who followed. This color scheme will help the show develop a consistent visual identity as it progresses. It avoids making the beginning feel overly cheerful and prevents the ending from feeling completely hopeless, ensuring the entire series feels cohesive and part of the same world.
