Just because a TV show gets cancelled doesn’t mean it was unpopular. Many well-liked shows have been cut short, and CBS programs are no exception. With streaming services, it’s now easier to watch those shows that ended prematurely, and Prime Video is adding five seasons of one such unfairly cancelled CBS series only a year after its original run finished.
As a big fan, I was totally bummed when Blue Bloods got cancelled, but here’s some good news: the first five seasons are coming to Prime Video on March 31st! It’s been just over a year since the show wrapped up after fourteen seasons – it really felt like a premature ending, if you ask me. For those who don’t know, Blue Bloods started on CBS back in 2010 and follows the Reagan family, a New York City family with generations dedicated to police work. It’s all about how they navigate their jobs and their personal lives. You’ve got Frank (Tom Selleck), his dad Henry (Len Cariou), and his kids Danny (Donnie Wahlberg), Erin (Bridget Moynahan), and Jamie (Will Estes) – a great family dynamic, and I’m excited to revisit those early seasons!
Blue Bloods Was Cancelled Despite Being a Top-Rated CBS Show
Blue Bloods was a huge success for CBS for 14 seasons, consistently attracting a large audience and ranking as one of the network’s most popular shows, especially on Friday nights. It stood out for its combination of gripping crime stories and heartwarming family moments, like the famous Sunday dinners, which created a dedicated and enthusiastic fanbase (with an average 82% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes). Despite its popularity, CBS cancelled the show in 2023 after almost 15 seasons. Even the stars, like Tom Selleck, and producers took pay cuts hoping to make one final season possible.
The decision to end Blue Bloods wasn’t about the show’s performance, but rather CBS wanting to update its programming. This cancellation upset both dedicated fans, who created online petitions hoping to bring the show back, and the people who worked on it. Tom Selleck later told TV Insider he was frustrated by the cancellation, feeling Blue Bloods was often overlooked because it quickly became a hit. He continued to hope CBS would change its mind in the following months, but ultimately, the original series ended. Despite this, Blue Bloods remains a remarkable and long-lasting show that showed the personal side of police work. While the main series was cancelled prematurely, a spin-off called Boston Blue premiered on CBS in 2025, continuing the Reagan family’s story in a new location.
Other CBS Shows Now on Prime Video?
Prime Video isn’t just for Blue Bloods fans! March has been a fantastic month for those who enjoy classic network television. On March 25th, the streamer added all seasons of several popular CBS shows, including All in the Family, Good Times, Rules of Engagement, and Unforgettable. And there’s more to come! Starting March 31st, Prime Video will also stream the first five seasons of Criminal Minds, all seasons of Ghost Whisperer, and the Paramount+ documentary series FBI True.
