The villains in Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End are unique. They’re initially presented as simply evil, lacking compassion and often copying humans to stay alive. While the anime features many demons, the Seven Sages of Destruction stand out as the most powerful and enigmatic.
The latest episode just wrapped up, giving us a first look at the highly anticipated Golden Land Arc. The episode concluded with the official anime introduction of Macht, widely considered the series’ most compelling villain. But before meeting Macht, Frieren and her friends had already crossed paths with the other Seven Sages.
What are The Seven Sages of Destruction in Frieren Beyond Journey’s End?
In the world of Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, demons were much more common in the past. The Seven Sages of Destruction were powerful demon mages who served the Demon King – the very same one that Frieren and her companions spent ten years battling to defeat.
The Seven Sages were military leaders who assisted the Demon King in conquering important human lands, especially in the North. They followed the commands of Schlacht the Omniscient, a very powerful demon with the ability to foresee the future. Later, it is discovered that the Hero of the South ultimately defeated Schlacht.
Despite being known as humanity’s biggest enemies, most of the Seven Sages were already dead when the story began. Before Himmel became a hero, the previous hero defeated three of them. Himmel and his team then killed two more, leaving only two who managed to escape and were still alive during the events of the anime.
The Seven Sages Who Have Been Named in Frieren So Far are:
- Aura the Guillotine
- Bose the Immortal
- Grausam the Miraculous
- Macht of the Golden Land
Aura the Guillotine was Frieren’s First Major Victory in the Anime
She was the first of the Seven Sages to appear in the series, showing up in episode eight of Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End Season 1. The demons Lugner, Linie, and Draht served under her.
I was absolutely floored when I learned about Aura! She was one of the original Four Sages, and she actually ran from the Hero of the South and again after the Demon King was defeated! But the really unforgettable part? Frieren took her down in what’s become a truly legendary anime battle. It’s crazy because despite being so small, she had this terrifying power – she could completely dominate anyone she fought!
Aura used a spell called Auserlese to compare her magical power to that of her opponents. The spell used a set of scales – whichever person had more mana would dominate the other. Because Aura had an incredibly large reserve of mana, she always won, and built a loyal army completely devoted to her service.
This made Aura believe her magical power was unmatched, causing her to underestimate Frieren. Demons usually reveal all their power, so Aura didn’t realize Frieren was hiding hers. When Frieren unleashed her true strength, it completely overwhelmed Aura, forcing her to submit. Frieren then commanded Aura to end her own life, shattering Aura’s pride and leading her to obey by beheading herself.
Bose the Immortal was a Demon of Unbreakable Barriers
Bose the Immortal was a powerful demon and one of the Seven Sages who survived an encounter with the Hero of the South. He wasn’t lucky enough to avoid death forever, however, and was eventually killed by Himmel during his journey to defeat the Demon King. While little is known about his personality, Bose, like many demons, was incredibly confident in his abilities – a pride that ultimately led to his destruction.
Bose wasn’t immortal, but he was incredibly difficult to kill. His strength came from creating powerful defenses that shielded him from deadly attacks. He was a master of barrier magic, able to conjure shields that were unmatched during his lifetime. However, these barriers weren’t unbreakable; sufficiently strong physical force could still damage or break through them.
Grausam the Miraculous had Illusory Magic That Could Fool Anyone
Grausam the Miraculous was one of seven powerful sages who managed to survive a fight against the Hero of the South. He was eventually defeated by Himmel and the hero’s companions. Known for his silence, Grausam possessed incredible mental magic that allowed him to achieve seemingly impossible feats, earning him the title ‘the Miraculous’.
Grausam can change how people see him, making him a skilled illusionist. The form he usually takes – a tall, thin young demon – might not be his true appearance. He can also use his mental magic to hide himself completely, even from powerful individuals like Frieren, making it seem as though he isn’t there at all.
Grausam’s most powerful spell is called Ansehelschella. It creates incredibly realistic illusions, showing his opponents the fulfillment of their forgotten dreams. This distraction leaves them vulnerable, as they’re caught up in experiencing joys they believed were lost forever and unable to defend themselves.
Macht of the Golden Land is an Anomaly Among Demons in Frieren
He’s the final and strongest of the Seven Sages of Destruction, known for being the most terrifying of the group. He serves as the main villain in the Golden Land Arc, which began at the close of Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End Season 2.
Although Macht is powerful and respected, he doesn’t enjoy killing people or fighting them. He finds battles uninteresting because his great power makes winning too easy. Instead, he prefers to focus on things that genuinely capture his attention, especially humans.
What makes Macht unusual, even for his species, is his interest in living alongside humans instead of dominating or wiping them out. This gives him the appearance of kindness – he could even be considered a hero within the city of Weise. However, his desire to study human emotions seems driven by simple curiosity, not a genuine wish to befriend or show compassion.
Macht earned his reputation through his unique ability, Diagoldze – a spell that can turn anything into gold. He’s the one who created the Golden Land that many characters in the second half of Frieren Season 2 are searching for. In addition to Diagoldze, Macht is also highly skilled in traditional human magic and is capable of fully training talented human mages.
Three of Frieren’s Demon Sages Were Lost to the Legend of the Hero of the South
While three of the Seven Sages of Destruction remain unnamed, the latest episode of Frieren Season 2 shows they were defeated by the Hero of the South, aided by Slacht the Omniscient. This highlights the Hero of the South’s exceptional power, as they overcame three Sages and Slacht in a single battle – a feat that Himmel and his party could only achieve one Sage at a time.
Although the three unnamed Sages might get more development later on, it’s fitting that, similar to older legends predating Himmel, their names may be forgotten. This emphasizes a central idea in the story: time continues to pass and things fade with it.
