A24 is known for producing critically acclaimed independent films and inventive horror movies. Their upcoming 2026 release is a bit different, though – they’re adapting the popular online phenomenon known as the Backrooms into a full-length horror film. A24 has chosen the creator of numerous short films based on the Backrooms to direct, which seems like a great fit. Whether the movie can capture the same chilling effect as the original online experience remains to be seen, but if the success of Iron Lung is any indication, it could be a big hit.
Ahead of tomorrow’s full trailer reveal, A24 has shared a first glimpse at their new horror film, Backrooms. They released two teaser posters: one featuring Renate Reinsve peering around a doorway, and another showing Chiwetel Ejiofor looking up at something from below.

Backrooms Brings Creepy Pasta to the Big Screen
Many people are eager to see how a movie adaptation of the Backrooms will turn out. The popular online videos created by Kane Parsons present the story from the perspective of a young filmmaker who unexpectedly falls into the Backrooms – a seemingly endless maze of rooms. He explores this labyrinth, eventually encountering monsters within. The initial teaser trailer, released in February, features a voiceover of a man recounting his discovery of the Backrooms to his therapist.
The film centers around a therapist who enters a strange, other dimension to find a patient who has disappeared. Renate Reinsve will play the therapist, and Chiwetel Ejiofor is likely to play the missing patient. Mark Duplass, Finn Bennett, Lukita Maxwell, and Avan Jogia are also featured in the cast. Kane Parsons, known for his work on YouTube, is directing the A24 film, based on a screenplay by Will Soodik. The movie is inspired by the original concept, but isn’t a strict adaptation.
As a big fan, I’m really curious about how this film came together. Apparently, they filmed the whole thing in just over a month – from July 7th to August 14th of 2025! Based on the look of the original online shorts, with all the intentionally grungy details like the ‘moist carpets’ and ‘yellowed walls,’ it feels like they didn’t need a huge budget for set design. My biggest question though is about the monsters. In the YouTube shorts, they were these really low-budget, creepy pasta-inspired creatures, and I’m hoping they’ll look a bit more polished and impressive on the big screen.
The main question now is whether the upcoming content will focus on the classic Backrooms experience – endless hallways and creatures – or delve deeper into the story of the company that discovered the Backrooms and wants to profit from them. A new trailer will be released on March 31st, and the film Backrooms is scheduled to come out in theaters on May 29, 2026.
