LOTR: What Happened to Every Member of the Fellowship After Return of the King

While the Fellowship successfully destroys the One Ring and defeats Sauron, the Lord of the Rings films don’t show much of what happens to the characters afterwards. Rebuilding Middle-earth after such a conflict is a huge task, and J.R.R. Tolkien’s heroes continue to face new difficulties and go on further adventures.

Thankfully, life after the defeat of Sauron isn’t as bleak as the war itself was for these characters. While the battles leave lasting effects, most of them find happiness and help build a brighter future for Middle-earth.

8) Frodo Baggins

Having destroyed the One Ring in Mount Doom, Frodo returns to the Shire, though the journey nearly cost him his life. In Tolkien’s novels, he discovers the Shire has fallen under the control of Saruman, leading to a battle to free it, known as the Battle of Bywater. This event isn’t shown in Peter Jackson’s films, but it’s an important part of the original story. Once the Shire is liberated, Frodo briefly helps with the rebuilding as Deputy Mayor. He also writes an account of his adventures, continuing a tradition started by Bilbo, and further solidifying his legacy in Middle-earth.

The difficult quest to destroy the One Ring deeply affected Frodo, ultimately leading him to sail to the Undying Lands. These lands are usually reserved for immortal beings like the Valar, Maiar, and Eldar, but an exception is made for those who bear the Ring. Frodo goes there seeking peace after finding none in the Shire. We see him leave Middle-earth at the end of The Return of the King, but his fate beyond that remains a mystery.

7) Samwise Gamgee

After their difficult journey to Mount Doom, Sam returns to the Shire alongside Frodo and participates in the Battle of Bywater. Once Saruman is defeated and the Shire is safe, Sam spends the rest of his life there with his family. He marries Rosie Cotton, and they have thirteen children – one of whom will be featured in an upcoming film by Stephen Colbert. Sam and his family live with Frodo at Bag End whenever he’s home, and eventually inherit the house. Sam also becomes Mayor of the Shire, serving for an impressive seven terms over 49 years. After Rosie passes away, Sam joins Frodo in the Undying Lands, earning passage due to briefly carrying the One Ring. There, the two friends are finally reunited, giving them both the peaceful ending they deserve.

6) Aragorn

With Sam now governing the Shire, Aragorn is established as King Elessar, ruling over his own kingdom. The entire Lord of the Rings story leads to Aragorn becoming king, so it’s fitting that he spends his life after the War of the Ring leading his people. The war left Gondor in ruins and fractured relationships between the different human kingdoms, presenting Aragorn with a huge challenge. Despite facing resistance from those who had sided with Sauron, he eventually manages to unite his people and rebuild Gondor. After the war, Aragorn marries Arwen and they have at least three children. He rules for 122 years before dying at the age of 210. His son, Eldarion, then becomes king, and Aragorn is buried in Rath Dínen, alongside his friends Merry and Pippin.

5) Legolas

The beloved friendship between Legolas and Gimli doesn’t end with The Return of the King. After Aragorn’s wedding, they travel together, visiting places like Fangorn Forest and the Glittering Caves, which helps them understand and appreciate each other’s cultures. Legolas eventually settles in Ithilien, joining Faramir and Éowyn as they rule, and brings other elves from Mirkwood with him. Together, they work to rebuild and beautify Middle-earth. Years later, after Aragorn’s death, Legolas sails to the Undying Lands, a common practice for elves. Surprisingly, Gimli joins him on this journey, solidifying their place as one of Tolkien’s most memorable pairings.

4) Gimli

After Aragorn’s wedding, Gimli joined Legolas on a journey following the War of the Ring. Eventually, Gimli established a new home in the Glittering Caves, leading a group of dwarves from Erebor to settle there. He became their leader and helped rebuild Middle-earth, just like Legolas and Aragorn, with the dwarves resuming their mining work and even repairing the Great Gate of Minas Tirith. When Legolas sailed to the Undying Lands, Gimli accompanied him—a rare honor for a dwarf. While the reason isn’t fully explained, Legolas and Galadriel both spoke highly of him, and his significant contributions to Middle-earth, both during and after the war, likely played a role.

3) Gandalf

In the final scenes of The Return of the King, Gandalf travels with Frodo to the Undying Lands a few years after the defeat of Sauron. As one of the immortal Maia known as Olorin, this isn’t a new place for Gandalf—it’s a homecoming. Having fulfilled his purpose in helping Middle-earth, his departure feels natural. Tolkien notes that Gandalf visits Tom Bombadil before leaving, sparking curiosity about their conversation. However, since Tom Bombadil was excluded from Peter Jackson’s films, those who only saw the movies miss this moment. Even in the books, the content of their meeting—and the true nature of Tom Bombadil himself—remains a mystery.

2) Meriadoc Brandybuck

Like Frodo and Sam, Merry returns to the Shire after the war and fights in the Battle of Bywater. Tolkien wrote that drinking the Ent-draught made Merry grow taller than most hobbits. He later becomes the Master of Buckland, marries Estella Bolger, and they have a family. Merry also writes a book, drawing inspiration from the endings written by both Sam and Frodo. Even after the events of The Lord of the Rings, Merry continues to travel, visiting places like Gondor and Rohan. He eventually passes away in Gondor at the age of 102 and is buried alongside Aragorn.

1) Peregrin Took

After the war, Merry and Pippin’s lives continued to mirror each other, much like they did throughout their adventures in The Lord of the Rings. Both hobbits returned to the Shire, and Pippin eventually married a hobbit named Diamond, with whom he had a son called Faramir. He also became a leader in the Shire, taking on the role of Thain. Like Merry, Pippin traveled to visit Rohan and Gondor, and ultimately, he was buried near his friend and King Aragorn when he passed away.
