How Powerful Lobo is Compared to Superman

Jason Momoa will be back in the DC Universe for the Supergirl movie, but this time he’ll be playing the character Lobo. Lobo, created by Roger Slifer and Keith Giffen, started as a menacing villain but became increasingly popular with fans and writers alike. Keith Giffen was even surprised by the character’s success, telling Newsarama he originally intended Lobo as a parody of characters like the Punisher and Wolverine, and wasn’t sure why he became so popular as a tough, violent hero.

DC has been attempting to create a Lobo movie for years – plans were initially announced in 2009, but the project stalled. The version of Lobo appearing in Supergirl closely resembles the comic book character, and fans are eager to see this iconic anti-hero come to life on screen. While he’s currently facing off against Supergirl, many believe it’s only a matter of time before we see a live-action version of the classic rivalry between Superman and Lobo.

Lobo’s Powers Make Him a Match for Superman

Lobo is an incredibly tough alien from the planet Czarnia. Legend says only other Czarnians can actually kill him. He’s essentially immortal – so much so that both Heaven and Hell have turned him away. This means no matter how badly he’s beaten, he always gets back up to keep fighting. Lobo can survive in the harshness of space and even claims to have traveled through stars, which his incredible feats seem to support. When he does get hurt, he heals much faster and more completely than even Wolverine.

Even though Lobo is incredibly strong, it’s hard to say exactly how strong he is. Like Superman, his story has been restarted several times due to DC’s different versions of the universe. He’s a very good fighter, capable of battling some of DC’s best martial artists. However, Lobo’s biggest weakness is often his intelligence. While he’s usually smarter than average – and sometimes even brilliant – Superman has repeatedly been able to trick him.

Lobo and Superman Tend to be Evenly Matched

Okay, so Lobo and Superman… they’ve thrown down a lot, and honestly, it’s never really been clear who would win. Their first fight was just… bizarre. Apparently, Lobo had a few too many and decided a Kryptonian would be a fun challenge. But most of the time, it’s been a hit job – someone’s paying Lobo to take Superman out. I remember one particular scrap, detailed in DC First: Superman/Lobo, where this alien race wanted to take over Earth. They hired Lobo to eliminate Superman, but then they started attacking during the fight. Lobo actually tried to claim it voided the contract, saying they were basically helping him! It’s always messy with these two, and never a straightforward win for either side.

Superman has discovered that Lobo is a surprisingly tough opponent, capable of actually drawing blood. While Superman can certainly land powerful hits on Lobo, some of his usual abilities, like heat vision, aren’t very effective. Superman has occasionally used his incredible strength to gain an advantage – for example, in Superman: The Man of Steel #30, he punched Lobo into outer space, knowing Lobo could survive the vacuum but would be helpless without the ability to fly.

Superman Could Beat Lobo If He Ever Cut Loose

While Superman has occasionally defeated Lobo, especially when he’s been extra powerful (even prompting Lobo to admit Superman was getting stronger), their most fascinating fight happened in The Adventures of Superman annual #4. In that issue, Superman was controlled by the evil spirit Eclipso. Normally, Superman holds back in fights, even when his life is on the line – he even struggled to overcome this tendency while battling Doomsday. But with Eclipso in control, that restraint was completely gone.

When Superman was controlled by Eclipso, he attacked the Justice League and L.E.G.I.O.N., including Lobo. He defeated Lobo incredibly quickly and easily, leaving him barely conscious – and even Superman’s heat vision actually caused Lobo pain. Because Lobo always fights all-out, this fight demonstrates that Superman is fundamentally more powerful, even though he likely won’t achieve this kind of victory again under normal circumstances.
