Apple TV+ is bringing back the suspenseful story of Cape Fear as a new series. A recently released trailer gives a first look at the reimagining. This isn’t the first time the story has been told – Martin Scorsese directed a popular thriller in 1991 starring Nick Nolte, Juliette Lewis, and Robert De Niro (who received an Oscar nomination). That film was based on the novel The Executioners by John D. MacDonald. Even earlier, in 1962, Cape Fear was a movie starring Gregory Peck and Robert Mitchum.
The latest trailer for the Apple TV+ Cape Fear remake shows the series will draw more from the original novel and include elements not seen in either the book or previous film versions.
Apple TV’s Cape Fear Looks Like a Very Different Adpatation

The story of Sam Bowden and Max Cady has been told in a novel by John D. MacDonald and two films. In both the book and the 1962 movie, Sam is a man who testifies against a rapist, Max Cady, putting him in prison. However, the Martin Scorsese film portrays Sam differently – as a lawyer who actually helped convict his client by hiding evidence. Despite these differences, the core of the story remains the same: Max Cady eventually gets out of prison and seeks revenge.
The new trailer for the Apple TV series Cape Fear hints at a much darker story than previous versions. Unlike earlier adaptations where Max Cady was a sex offender, this series establishes him as a known killer – one that Tom and Anna Bowden helped imprison. Both Tom (previously Sam) and Anna are lawyers, and they played a direct role in Cady’s conviction, giving him a strong reason to seek revenge against them both. By portraying Max as a killer from the beginning, the series immediately establishes him as a more formidable and dangerous threat than in the original films, where his violent tendencies developed over time.
This new adaptation features a fantastic cast, with Patrick Wilson and Amy Adams playing Tom and Anna. Javier Bardem, an Academy Award winner, stars as Max Cady, who, in the trailer, reveals he blames the couple for destroying his former life. A line from Anna in the trailer—asking Tom if Max knows what they did—hints at a possible connection to the original film, where Sam concealed evidence. The series is described as being “inspired by” Scorsese’s movie, suggesting that these changes are intentional nods to the classic.
Nick Antosca, known for shows like Channel Zero and The Act, is the showrunner. The cast also includes CCH Pounder, Ron Perlman, and Ted Levine. The first two episodes premiered on Apple TV+ on June 5th, and new episodes will be released every Friday, with the season finale airing on July 31st.
