A classic spaghetti western, widely considered one of the greatest films in its genre, is coming to a new streaming service after nearly sixty years. While westerns were hugely popular from the 1940s to the 1960s, they lost ground to science fiction and then superhero movies. Recently, however, the western has experienced a comeback, largely thanks to Taylor Sheridan and his modern take on the genre. Next month, fans will be able to stream this iconic film on a major platform.
As a huge western fan, I have to say this film is a true masterpiece. The director, famous for The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, really outdid himself. While he’s known for those classic Clint Eastwood shoot-’em-ups, this one is much more layered and ambitious. It perfectly blends a raw, realistic feel with a grand, almost epic scope. It feels like a beautiful goodbye to the Old West and a welcome – though bittersweet – to the new America. Honestly, if this was the last western I ever watched, I’d be perfectly content.
‘Once Upon a Time in the West’ Is an Epic Tale of Lust, Revenge, Myth & More
Released in 1968, Once Upon a Time in the West is widely considered the ultimate spaghetti Western, directed by Sergio Leone and co-written with Sergio Donati. The film boasts a legendary cast, including Claudia Cardinale, Jason Robards, and features a memorable, emotionally resonant score by Ennio Morricone, a frequent collaborator of Leone’s. It’s a sweeping story of revenge, desire, and the clash between legend and the changing face of the American West.
The story starts with a dispute over a piece of land near Flagstone. A powerful railroad owner, Morton, wants it and sends his man, Frank, to intimidate the owner, McBain. But Frank ends up killing McBain and framing a notorious bandit, Cheyenne, for the crime. Adding to the chaos is a silent, skilled gunslinger with a personal vendetta. Soon, McBain’s wife, Jill, is caught in the middle of this dangerous conflict between these ruthless men.
‘Once Upon a Time in the West’ Is Now Hailed as One of the Best Films Ever Made

There’s no question that Once Upon a Time in the West is a masterpiece, even when compared to other great films by director Sergio Leone. The Library of Congress recognized its importance by adding it to the US National Film Registry, citing its cultural, historical, and artistic value. Today, it’s widely considered not just one of the best westerns ever made, but one of the greatest films of all time.
Considered a true cinematic masterpiece, Once Upon a Time in the West will be available to watch on Paramount+ starting April 1st – and it’s a film you can enjoy whether you’re a longtime fan or discovering it for the very first time.
