Adrian Mole casting revealed for upcoming reboot – and they should be familiar to Alan Carr fans

Oliver Savell will play the main character, Adrian Mole, in the BBC’s new version of ‘The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole Aged 13¾’.

As a huge fan of the book, I was thrilled to hear back in November that they were finally making a 10-part series based on Sue Townsend’s classic. I’ve been waiting for this for ages!

I remember when the BBC announced they were looking all over the country for a new lead actor! It was for a remake, and a tough role to fill, considering Gian Sammarco absolutely nailed it in the Thames TV version back in ’85. That original was a classic, so finding someone to step into those shoes was a big deal.

According to The Sun, actor Will Savell – known for playing a young Alan Carr in the ITV series Changing Ends – will be taking on a new role.

According to a source, the actor’s portrayal of a somewhat clumsy, glasses-wearing Alan in his youth on the show Changing Ends convinced producers he was perfect for the role of the Mole.

The BBC declined to provide comment on the story but TopMob understands this to be true.

The upcoming series is being written by a team led by David Nicholls, the author of One Day, and is being produced by Big Talk Studios.

Joining the writing team for the series are Caitlin and Caroline Moran, known for Raised by Wolves, Dillon Mapletoft and Oliver Taylor (Everyone Else Burns), and Jack Rooke (Big Boys).

The show begins on New Year’s Day in 1981, and follows Adrian as he hilariously documents his life as a teenager and within his family – all before the days of cell phones and social media.

Armed with just a rainbow-colored pen, Adrian finds himself preoccupied with his acne, his parents’ separation, the pain of his first crush, and a surprisingly persistent curiosity about what a woman’s nipple looks like.

Adrian’s mother, Pauline, is beginning to explore feminist ideas, while his father, George, is dealing with the stress of losing his job in a tough economic climate. Adrian’s life is also filled with interesting people, including his sweetheart, Pandora, his strong-willed grandmother, and his surprising friend, Bert Baxter, an elderly man known for his blunt language.

This compelling look at British suburban life explores how much things have changed, and yet stayed remarkably familiar. It’s a classic family story that’s both heartwarming and humorous, as well as deeply moving and touching.
