Eidos Montreal announced yesterday that 124 employees have been laid off, including studio head David Anfossi. The news was surprising, coming so soon after previous job cuts. According to sources who spoke with Insider Gaming’s Tom Henderson, the layoffs are a result of the cancellation of the game known as P11, or internally as “Wildlands.”
Talk about this project started last December, and it may have caused job cuts then. But sources say it actually began in early 2019, and it’s been a rocky road ever since. The development process faced constant issues, including switching game engines four times, a huge budget – far exceeding $100 million – and disagreements over the story’s direction.
High development costs are also said to be the reason a new Deus Ex game was cancelled. According to Henderson, Wildlands is an open-world, third-person action-adventure game starring a character named River. River is part of a group called the Spiritbounds and travels with a companion called “Redheart,” working to fight off dangerous spirits.
On top of existing problems, the game Wildlands was reportedly very close to being finished. According to Henderson, it had passed important testing stages and was being debugged, with a possible release planned for this year. However, it was ultimately cancelled, and Henderson suspects that Embracer Group, the owner of Eidos Montreal, likely lost interest in the project. The reason for the late cancellation remains a mystery.
This is another significant setback for the studio, which has already faced multiple layoffs. It’s unclear what the future holds for them.
