The Super Mario Bros. Movie is out in theaters this week, and if you’re planning to see it, you might want a quick refresher on what happened in the first one.
It’s easy to forget the story of the first Super Mario Bros. movie if you saw it back in April 2023, given the time that’s passed.

The Super Mario Bros Movie recap: What happened in the first film?
The first movie begins with Mario and Luigi as ordinary plumbers working in Brooklyn. They quickly find themselves needing to save the city from a major plumbing crisis.
As the plumbers work to repair the issue below ground, they discover a Warp Pipe. Entering it, they are swiftly separated. Mario finds himself in the Mushroom Kingdom, while Luigi is immediately taken prisoner by Bowser.
For a while, the story focuses on Mario as he meets Toad, who then introduces him to Princess Peach. Peach, in turn, introduces Mario to Donkey Kong. Throughout all of this, Bowser is becoming an increasingly dangerous threat.
Mario defeats Donkey Kong in a battle, gaining the loyalty of his gorilla troops. However, as they begin their journey home on the Rainbow Road in their karts, Bowser’s army ambushes them.
Oh no! Bowser’s grabbed a Super Star, which means he’s totally invincible right now! And get this – he actually wants to marry Princess Peach! It’s crazy! He’s threatening everyone in the Mushroom Kingdom, and Peach is pretending to go along with it to try and save everyone, I guess.
The wedding day arrives, and Peach has secretly brought an Ice Flower with her. She uses it to freeze Bowser at a critical moment, but the danger isn’t over yet.
Luigi and other prisoners are being lowered into a lava pit by Bowser’s forces, but the heroes manage to save them just in time.
Okay, so the battle just keeps escalating, and eventually everyone – all the main characters – gets pulled through these crazy pipes and portals, ending up back in Brooklyn! It was awesome! Finally, they managed to beat Bowser by using a Blue Mushroom to shrink him down. Talk about a satisfying ending!
Our heroes have defeated Bowser, shrinking him down and finally capturing him! With the day saved, Mario and Luigi return to the Mushroom Kingdom, bringing all their plumbing tools with them. That concludes the story, but there’s one last surprise: a scene after the credits shows Yoshi hatching from an egg!
