Assassin’s Creed Shadows Receives Upgraded PSSR Support on April 7th

Following games like Silent Hill f, Resident Evil Requiem, and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Assassin’s Creed Shadows is the newest title to take advantage of the upgraded PSSR technology. It will be available next week for PlayStation 5 Pro owners and will offer better graphics in all three display modes: Performance, Balanced, and Quality.

According to Robert Foriel, a technical art director at PlayStation, this new technology results in clearer, more stable images. It gets rid of blurry visuals caused by movement and vibration, creating a smoother and more captivating experience that keeps players focused on the game.

Comparison videos demonstrate substantial improvements in areas like ray-traced lighting and dynamic plants. The lighting is now more realistic and stable, with fewer visual glitches, and plants appear much sharper, particularly when far away or moving. Effects with particles also look better, maintaining quality even with complex, see-through layers.

The upgrade went smoothly for the team, according to technical artist Nicholas Lopez. He explained that the code changes were very small, nearly the same as when they first integrated the original PSSR. Despite the minimal effort, the visual quality of the images improved significantly. “It’s unusual to achieve such a big visual improvement with so little adjustment,” Lopez said.

Improved support for PSSR will be available starting April 7th with update 1.1.9, launching at 7 AM PST. Don’t anticipate a lot of new features, as the game is nearing the end of its post-launch support, but we’re still hoping for a few unexpected additions.

I’m so excited to hear that Cyberpunk 2077, Alan Wake 2, and Control Ultimate Edition are all getting support for this new tech! I’m definitely keeping an eye out for when those updates drop. And honestly, I’m going to enjoy Upgraded PSSR as much as I can now, since they’re not planning on updating it anymore. It’s a bummer about that, but at least we’ll have those other games to look forward to!
