Many TV shows have underwhelming final episodes, but one comedy’s ending caused a major split among fans exactly 12 years ago today. It’s always difficult to conclude a popular show in a way that everyone loves, and it’s especially tricky with comedies. Because people often re-watch their favorite sitcoms for comfort, saying goodbye to the characters is hard enough without the writers also trying to make it a funny farewell.
While some sitcom finales are celebrated, like those of MASH and The Office, others are famously disliked, such as the endings of Seinfeld and How I Met Your Mother. How I Met Your Mother gained a loyal following and strong ratings throughout the 2010s, often being compared to Friends because of its appealing group of six main characters. However, the show lost much of its audience’s good will with its highly controversial finale on March 31, 2014.
How I Met Your Mother’s March 31, 2014 Finale Was Incredibly Divisive

The final season of How I Met Your Mother was a struggle for many viewers, and the series finale received a lot of criticism. The entire season took place over a single weekend – Robin and Barney’s wedding – with the finale jumping ahead in time to reveal the characters’ futures. While the show had played with storytelling throughout its nine seasons, this approach felt like a step too far for many fans.
The unusual format of this final season of How I Met Your Mother resulted in very little interaction between the show’s main characters, significantly reducing their memorable chemistry. This was compounded by the controversial twist ending, but the decision to divide the storyline throughout the season didn’t help. Ted barely interacted with the mother until the very last episode, and her character was quickly killed off in a future scene soon after.
How I Met Your Mother’s Controversial Ending Makes More Sense On A Re-Watch

Although the ending of How I Met Your Mother felt surprising when it first aired, a re-watch reveals it was the intention all along. While Cristin Milioti’s character was beloved, and some fans wished she’d appeared earlier, the show was ultimately focused on the connection between Ted and Robin, rather than Ted’s relationship with the mother he spent so much time searching for.
Honestly, after watching Ted and Robin go back and forth so many times throughout the series, I wasn’t really surprised by how things ended. But I also don’t think the finale came out of nowhere, or that the show didn’t give us enough hints along the way. It felt like a natural, if unexpected, conclusion to their story.
Throughout its nine seasons, How I Met Your Mother consistently highlighted Ted and Robin’s connection above all other relationships. Because neither of them found lasting happiness with anyone else, the finale’s decision to reunite them felt earned, even though the way it was revealed was rushed and the show didn’t give enough attention to the character of Tracy, who fans had waited a long time to meet.
