A Polish games translator, Ryszard Chojnowski, previously suggested that Warhorse Studios was developing a role-playing game based on The Lord of the Rings. But Mike Straw from Insider Gaming, who originally reported on the potential project, has clarified that this information is incorrect.
Reports suggest that Crystal Dynamics, not Warhorse Studios (the creators of Kingdom Come: Deliverance), is developing a new game set in a well-known fantasy world. Sources familiar with the project have shared this information, but both the studio and its parent company, Embracer Group, have not confirmed it.
This new game appears to be a competitor to Hogwarts Legacy. It’s said to be funded with $100 million from the Abu Dhabi Investment Office. While development has been happening for some time, the game is still quite a ways off, much like it was reported last September.
Crystal Dynamics is also working on other Tomb Raider games, including Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis and Tomb Raider: Catalyst. Legacy of Atlantis will be released this year and reimagines the original game using the Unreal Engine 5. Catalyst, coming next year, is set several years after Tomb Raider: Underworld and is planned to be the most expansive adventure in the series so far.
Will the studio start working on a Lord of the Rings RPG after the release of Legacy of Atlantis or Catalyst? Only time will tell, but it would be exciting to see their take on Tolkien’s world.
